“It’s a little late for a towel. The damage is done,” I tease. “I’m pretty sure I got the brunt of it anyway. But, yeah, I got him.”

She rubs her nose back and forth against my shirt and steps back.

I cock my head and look at her. “Did you just wipe your nose on my shirt?”

Her eyes widen, her jaw drops, and she covers her mouth with her hand. “Did I?”

I look down. Her gaze follows mine. We both see the snot trail that runs along the top of the pee stain.

“Ohmigod, I did!” She looks horrified. “I don’t know what I was thinking. I can’t believe I did that.” She buries her face in her hands, which makes Nico squeal with delight and blow spit bubbles.

“Quit being cute,” I tell him. “I’m going to use this story to embarrass you when you’re older.”

She widens her fingers and peeks at me from between them. “I am so sorry.”

I laugh. “Darbs, there’s no need to be sorry. It’s okay. I’m not upset. I needed something to go with the pee and now I have it.”

“Oh god!” she cries, burying her face back in her hands.

“I probably won’t keep it on, though.” I lay Nico on his changing table; he smiles big and starts to babble. “My buddy agrees.” I smile at him, and I secure his diaper, then grab the back collar of my shirt to pull it over my head.

“Whoa,” Darby says through her fingers.

I turn to face her, and she’s staring at me.

Rather, my chest.

“What?”

She shakes her head. “Nothing. I mean, I didn’t realize you were so cut.”

I look down at myself and shrug. “I’ve been a bit more active lately.”

“I’ll say.” The way she agrees makes me smile. I’ve always appreciated Darby’s ability to say whatever is on her mind.

She comes up to the table to make faces at Nico. “I didn’t get much on me, but I may still borrow a shirt from Brie when they're done in there.”

“Half an hour, that’s what I was told.” I glance over, immediately noticing the hard nipples under her t-shirt. Now that I think about it, I don’t remember feeling a bra or bathing suit under her shirt when we hugged.

“We’ll see if they actually meant it, won’t we, Nico?” She leans in as she’s talking and kisses his nose. He hits her in the face with his fist and squeals.

She straightens and turns to look at me. “Blowing my nose in your shirt aside, thank you for the hug and the laughs, Blake. And definitely the eye candy.” She gestures to my torso, then leans up on tiptoe to quickly kiss my cheek. “I needed that.” She smiles as she comes back down on her feet.

My stomach does a little flip, startling me.

She swoops up Nico and the two babble at each other as they leave the nursery to head back to the party. I do a double-take.

Was there something in that smile?

Or was that just Darby being Darby, and I’m being silly?

It’s the latter, I’m sure of it.

I think.
