Who the hell is this guy? And why is he calling her B?

“Pete,” Bristol stammers. “Yeah, this is Wyatt. My, uh,” she stalls.

“You may as well tell them we’re practically there anyway,” I say, then hold my hand out toPete. “Wyatt Reed, Bristol’s fiancé.”

“Fiancé?” Amy says. “Since when?”

“It’s new,” Bristol says.

I say, “Does it matter when?”

Pete shakes my hand. His grip is limp, and his skin is clammy. I wouldn’t like him based solely on that if I didn’t already dislike him for calling Brie, B.

“Honey,” Pete says to Amy. “This is B.” He stresses the letter as though it’s supposed to mean something.

Amy gasps. “TheB?”

Pete nods solemnly.

“Her?” Amy scoffs in disbelief.

“My one who got away,” Pete says.

Amy stares at Pete, some unspoken communication happens between them, and she joins their hands and holds them up like a united front. “Until he met me, of course.”

Pete brightens. “Until Amy. MyA.”

“Which comes before B,” Amy adds smugly.

Pete nods and raises their hands to his mouth to kiss Amy’s.

“Amy is your wife?” Bristol holds in a chuckle.

“Just over a year now,” Pete says proudly.

“That’s very fitting,” Bristol smirks.

“I can’t believe someone likeyousnagged someone likehim,” Amy says to Bristol, nodding toward me.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” I ask.

She doesn’t answer.

“He’s A’s one who got away,” Pete leans toward Bristol as he says it. Like I’m not even there.

What a fucking tool.

Bristol tenses beside me. Amy is a sore subject for her, and I don’t like it. “Kinda hard to let something ‘get away’ that you never had. Right Ames?” I ask.

Amy’s eyes narrow, the only indication that she hears me. The party goes on around us as the four of us standoff. Like a double duel at sunrise, just waiting for someone to yell, ‘draw.’

Bristol curls into my side. I’m not sure she even realizes she’s doing it. I tighten my hold on her anyway.

“Who would have thought you’d grow up to be so…” Amy starts.

“Beautiful?” Pete suggests, looking longingly at Bristol.

Amy studies Bristol for a moment. “I was going to say unique.”
