“Fucking hard,” I say.
He nods.
“If I’m being honest, I kinda hated it.”
“Yeah.” He looks around. “Me too.” We walk toward the main hotel building where the rooms are.
“Why do it then?”
“Taylor planned the weekend, and it’s important to her.”
I nod like I understand, even though I don’t. It’s becoming a habit.
He shrugs. “She’s having my baby, dude. So, when she’s happy, I’m happy.”
“Makes sense,” I say as we get on the elevator. I wish he sounded happier. I push the button for eighteen. “Hey, are you—”
He turns to me as the doors close. “Want to tell me what the fuck is going on?”
Oh yeah.
“With?” I know what he’s asking. I’m just buying time.
“You literally patted me on the back and said, ‘If anyone asks, I’m engaged to your sister?’ Last I heard, you two hated each other.”
“I don’t hate Bristol.” I frown.
“Well, she hates you.”
I nod like I understand because this time, I do. We haven’t talked about it yet, but it’s pretty clear shewantsto hate me and fights it most of the time.
“Well?”
“Her ex is here, and he was giving her shit at the mixer—”
“She has an ex here?” He sounds surprised.
“Yeah. Amy’s husband, of all people.”
“So fucking weird.” He shakes his head and briefly looks down at his feet, rubbing at his chin. Then looks back at me. “Not only did I not know Taylor and Amy knew each other. But I had no idea she asked Amy to be a bridesmaid until last night.”
“Didn’t you guys discuss this shit ahead of time?”
He scoffs. “Nah, man. Taylor doesn’t know the meaning of the word.”
“You sure—” I start when he asks, “What’s his name? The guy Brie dated?”
“Pete Thompson, I think he said.” I want to ask Blake if he’s sure about this marriage, but I want to talk about Pete more.
I’m a shitty friend.
“Huh, I didn’t see that one coming.” He shakes his head as we exit the elevator.
“Me neither. He told me Brie’s the one who got away.”
“Got away? How long were they dating? I can’t believe I didn’t know this.” He runs a hand through his hair, mussing it. “Was it serious?”
“I don’t think so, at least, not for Brie. Sounded like it was a couple of months at best. Get this.” We reach my room and pause. His is across the hall and farther down. “He tells me Brie’s the one who got awayin frontof Amy. And introduces her to Amy as B. And Amy says, ‘TheB?’ like they’ve talked about her before.
