“We understand each other?”
“I’m not going to hurt her,” I say.
“Because you’re not going to touch her.”
“If I do, it’ll be because it means something.”
His eyes search my face before he nods, seemingly satisfied.
He pulls something from his pocket—“Edible?”—and holds out his hand, offering me a few pieces of individually wrapped candy. Not being obvious, but not hiding it either.
“I got them from Debbie’s husband.”
“Who’s Debbie?” I ask.
“I don’t know,” Blake says. “Maybe bridesmaid number two.”
Blake’s wedding party is so large, it’s impossible to know who everyone is.
Bristol rejoins us, and I unwrap two candies and hand one to her. She hesitates before taking it from me.
“Don’t do it if you don’t want to.” I pop the other candy in my mouth.
“I never said I didn’t want to,” she says. “If both you and my brother are going to be stoned, I won’t be the one who isn’t.”
Blake hands me a couple more ‘for the road’ and leaves to find Taylor.
I hold the list in front of us so we can both look at the same time.
