No!

Instead, I say, “Okay.”

“We don’t have anyone,” he says.

“Got it. How can I help?”

“I need you to be the maid of honor.”

“Me?” I squeak. “I don’t even—”

I stop myself before I admit I don’t even like Taylor. Because Blake doesn’t know that, and I don’t ever want him to.

“I know you don’t like Taylor,” he says.

“Of course I do,” I lie.

“You lie about that just as poorly as Wy does.”

Because it’s my brother, and I’ll do anything for him, I ignore his comment and say, “Whatever you need me to do.”

“I’m glad you said that,” he says. “Because Taylor will be calling you with a few things, and I need you to go to the Seaside, Oregon, venue with me a few days early to help with some last-minute things.”

“Of course,” I say. “My whole week is clear. We just finished the podcast for the week after the wedding, and it’s on its way to editing and production, so I don’t have anything else that requires my attention.”

“You’re the best, Brie.”

“I know,” I say, making him laugh.

I knew he would. It’s an ongoing joke between us, that’s not all that funny.

“Oh, hey, can you also go to where Taylor got her dress to pick up hers and the maid of honor ‘s?”

“Yeah, I’ll find out which place it is from her.”

“It’s that one everyone goes to downtown. Something bridal.”

“That’s helpful, Blake. Thank you.”

He misses the sarcasm in my voice completely. “Good, I’m not allowed to see it, so I can’t pick it up. The maid of honor was supposed to bring both dresses with her, and well, you know the rest.” He sounds stressed out. Now I feel bad. Especially for what I’m about to say.

“I will do whatever you need. But how is this going to work?”

“Which part?”

“The actual part? You can’t safely see Taylor until she’s past her quarantine period, so how does the wedding part work?”

“Oh, that.” He laughs, but it’s not a happy sound. “She’s not worried about that part. At least not yet.”

“But that’s the most important part,” I argue.

“You’d think that wouldn’t you?” Blake sighs. I can tell he doesn’t want to talk about it further.

“Can I do anything else?”

“I have a growing list from Taylor and rumors of a binder. I’ll have to let you know.”

I can only imagine.
