“Am I allowed to ask questions if they might include how much money you’re willing to invest into things?”
“I think we have to talk about money and what we can and can’t do. Not this morning if you’re too tired but eventually we do.”
“Say we go camping and I get pregnant. Indigo also gets Ambry pregnant.”
“The kids are provided for regardless of multiples,” Cobalt said.
“What if we need nesting space? The idea of relocating with a dozen dragon eggs in tow terrifiesme.”
“We have options that we wouldn’t even have to buy. If you want privacy, we pick a good cabin, and the eggs can hatch there. There’s the guesthouse and a few other options too. If none of them appeal to you, you’d have to come to some agreement with Ambry on what’s important in a house and we could buy one. Not that I think you’d two have trouble there. Don’t take this the wrong way, but you’re living in a draconic-sized breadbox with him, mate.”
“Could it be done before the eggs come?”
“Yes,” he nodded. “Most of the work will be deciding where you want to live and it doesn’t have to be forever. You can change your mind and want to move later too.”
“I’m nosy,” Ambry said as the bedroom door opened and light from the corridor poured into the room. “I also like the idea of getting away from the city.”
“What about your job?” Indigo asked from behind him.
“Don’t stand out there and let all the light in. Come lay down, you two,” I sighed. “We’ll save time and maybe get some sleep if we all talk about it together. I’m actually starting to get tired.”
We spent an hour hashing out the details of the camping trip with their third brother popping on and off their link to help. We’d borrow one of his double cab trucks for the trips and we’d go out to one of the less populated areas for our matingmoon. Only, we’d stay there as long as we wanted. Normally, I couldn’t leave anything open ended but it didn’t feel like the edges of our plans were flapping around in the wind. Instead, the future was a map we were drawing together and besides belonging side-by-side we weren’t sure what came next.
No one romped that morning despite the tests. We were too tired and wired all at the same time. I dozed off wrapped up in Cobalt’s arms with Ambry pushed up against my back. Even as my eyelids drifted closed I waited for the nightmares. They didn’t come. Well, they didn’t barge into my head as they normally fancied doing. Instead, they whispered around the edges of my dreams trying to pull a smoke screen over all the good stuff that might finally fall into my life. They had a way of doing that even on normal nights. My life hadn’t been horrible before Cobalt. My childhood was traumatic but Ambry and I had built a life that worked for us. We did our best and most of the time were satisfied with our small existence. Now, we had to build a life that fit all of us plus any kids that might pop out later.
Chapter Eight
Cobalt
Someone knocked on the door around noon and I almost let them keep at it. Then I glanced at Odell curled up on his side and sleeping too peacefully for me to allow some numb nuts to wake him up. What could they possibly need from us? It wasn’t Teal. He’d have given us a head’s up he was coming. Even our grandparents wouldn’t show up like this. Would our parents? If they wanted to would they even know where to find us?
I opened the door squinting at a man I thought was Ambry for a fraction of a second. Dude looked almost like a replica of my brother’s mate. I opened my mouth to ask if he’d locked himself out. Except Ambry was still asleep on top of my brother in the bedroom. I squinted again, trying to figure out what the hell was going on.
“Mr. Garner?” I blinked.
“Smarter than your reputation gives you credit for. Excuse me, that’s not fair,” the older man said, leaning over to peek inside the apartment. “Which one are you?”
“UH… I’m Cobalt. Are you Mr. Garner? How do I even know that? You look so much like Ambry,” I yawned.
“Probably from Teal’s knowledge. You’re the man of the hour.”
“No, I’m not. Indigo is with Ambry not me,” I shook my head. “Odell is my mate.”
“And that’s exactly why I want to speak with you. May I come in?” Mr. Garner asked but didn’t wait for me to answer. I glanced around the living room at the pizza boxes left over from last night and my heart sank into my stomach. I wasn’t sure whatAmbry’s dad wanted but he didn’t look thrilled at the state of the house.
“We were hungry,” was my only defense.
“Still keeping up with that altar,” he clucked under his breath. “Shall we sit, Cobalt?”
“It’s early. What do you want?” I squinted at him and tried to shake my dragon awake. Until he was up and at it, I’d be useless, and this wasn’t a good time for that particular quality.
“Please, sit down. I understand I barged in on you all and I plan to keep it brief. We need to discuss this before my sons wake up. They’re both my boys. After the war, we became a family.”
“OH, the talk,” I sighed and sat down next to him on the loveseat trying to give the wolf shifter as much space as I could on the tiny piece of furniture.
“Yes, your reputation proceeds you, Mr. Moonscale,” he said.
“I’m not my grandpa,” I frowned. “I know I sound crazy right now. I’m just tired—”
