“It feels really good, but not enough.”

“More?”

“No. I just really wish it was you. Your cock. Oh, fuck, Zak.”

“Rub your clit. I wish I was sucking your nipples right now.”

I pushed my hand between my thighs and it was over. I was gasping into the phone, coming hard. His sexy, ragged noises followed in seconds.

I touched the button to stop his toy, and the rumbles inside me ceased. We both sighed and lay there, not talking.

“I miss you, too,” I confessed.

No response.

“Zak?”

“Hmm? Oh, fuck,” he said in a drowsy tone of discovery. “I gotta clean up. Can I call you after I shower?”

“You don’t have to. Get some sleep. It sounds like you need it.”

“I do.” He yawned. “Dad’s been getting up at night. He keeps thinking the TV is on.” I had the sense he was moving, then I heard the thrum of the shower starting. “But thanks for this. Let’s do it again soon.”

“Sure. Um, maybe we could do it in person. I might, um...” Why was I so nervous? “I’m hoping to fly out with Mom when she goes home. I’ll let you know. Hopefully, you could get away for a few hours.”

“I’ll make it happen.”

I smiled. “Okay. Bye, Zak.”

“Bye, Meg.”

Chapter 56

Zak

“Is there any chance you can hang out with Dad for a few hours on Wednesday?” I asked Zara when we were having dinner at her place on Sunday night. “Meg is coming in late Tuesday. She was hoping we could have lunch Wednesday.”

Meg wanted to talk, and I was kind of nervous about it. The phone sex was great, we texted all the time, but long distance wasn’t ideal. I kept thinking she ought to expect more from me. To get more.

“I’ll see what I can figure out.” Zara glanced out at the empty driveway.

Kyle was picking up Jade from a playdate. Lance was in the living room, flipping through old hot rod magazines with Dad. Ollie was doing his best to take me down, tackling my leg. One day he would. For now, I could still pick him up and dangle him by his ankles, which he seemed to love.

“I know—” Zara paused in setting the table. She sent a miserable look toward the living room, then back to me. “I know you really miss her. I know I should say you should go to Toronto.”

“We’re not having this conversation again. I’m here.”

“I know. But I feel like one of us should be happy.” She brushed the back of her wrist beneath her eye.

“What’s going on with you two?” It was killing me.

“Nothing. But everything.” She waved her hand in frustration. “We’re seeing a counselor. And we’re being audited. It’s routine, but it’s a nightmare. And—” She lowered her voice so she mostly mouthed, “I’m pregnant.”

“What?”

“That was Kyle’s reaction too.” She clattered the rest of the cutlery into place.

“I’m sorry. That’s... a surprise. I didn’t think you guys were trying.”
