Cassidy had a panic button, a tracker, and his grandmother. They didn’t need him right now. They could have a fun day all by themselves, and hopefully, he would be able to take care of Don for her.
He hadn’t told Cassidy, but it wasn’t just the shoes that were going to be used as bait. She hadn’t met everyone from the other side of the office, which was run by Lincoln’s brother Harris.Harris’ team, which was led by Grant Sexton, aka Sexy, had a woman on it, and she happened to be about Cassidy’s height and have long brown hair just like Cassidy’s.
Darcie Maverick had already agreed to be their bait.
The only reason he hadn’t told Cassidy was because he didn’t want her to feel like she was putting someone else in danger. She wasn’t.He was.
But he knew Darcie could handle it.
Walking into the office, he was surprised to see Mason hanging out by the front desk, leaning on it with his elbows and talking to Jennifer.Mason was dressed in his usual suit, today paired with a grey patterned tie.Jennifer had opted for a colorful spring dress with pink, orange, and red flowers on it, and she’d pulled her hair half-back with some kind of matching clip.
They both looked up as he entered.
“Morning,” he said to both Jennifer and Mason.
“Good morning.”Jennifer smiled up at him, but there was worry in her eyes.“I heard about the flowers. Is Cassidy okay?I wasn’t sure if I should text and bother her or not.”
“Text,” David said immediately.“She’s fine, but she’ll appreciate you checking in.”
“We’re not sure the flowers have anything to do with her at this point,” Mason reminded both of them.“The fact that I received some makes me think that they maybe really aren’t.”
“Well, shit. Then she had to move for nothing?”Jennifer asked, frowning.
“Not for nothing. That’s how we found the trackers in her shoes,” Mason pointed out.“So, now we know that he was tracking her while they were together, which points to his obsession with her.It also means it’s likely that he is still pursuing her.Jaxon is working on reversing the signal to see if we can track him.Even if that doesn’t work, we can use the trackers to hopefully trap him.So, it wasn’t for nothing.”
“There is that.”Jennifer sighed and turned to look at David.“She’s living with you now?Is she still going to be able to come to game night?”
“Yes, she’s there with my grandmother now.I don’t know about game night.”He glanced at Mason.“It might depend on what else happens this week.We know she had the trackers in her shoes, so if that’s the only way Don was keeping tabs on her, it might be safe.On the other hand, he’ll also know that it’s her normal routine to go there. So, if we haven’t found him by then, it might not be safe for her.”
Jennifer scowled.
“That sucks. She shouldn’t have to miss out on game night.Maybe we can do it at your house?”
“Maybe.”David was not the type of person who liked a bunch of people in his space. On Saturday, it had been necessary and protection related.Having a bunch of people over playing games and eating and talking…
But it would also make Cassidy happy, and that would be worth the invasion and the cleanup.Jennifer was right.Cassidy shouldn’t have to miss out on something she enjoyed.David wasn’t going to let Douchebag take that away from her if he could help it.
“If we’re lucky, we’ll find him in the next few days, and you’ll be able to gather at Claudia’s like normal,” he said fervently.Fingers crossed. He’d tolerate it if he had to, but he could still hope it wouldn’t be necessary.
“Find him and bury him,” Jennifer muttered.
“Inside thought, Jennifer,” Mason said immediately.“Or at least, don’t say it in front of witnesses.”
Jennifer just snorted.
“Please, you won’t testify against me.You’d be the one helping me bury the body.”She tossed her hair, raising an eyebrow at them, daring either of them to disagree.Mason and David exchanged a glance. She wasn’t wrong.“Anyway.You two, shoo.I’m going to text Cassidy, and I have work I need to get done.”
“I need to talk to you, anyway,” Mason said, straightening up and focusing his attention on David. They walked away from Jennifer before she could shoo them again.
“What’s going on?”David asked, immediately on high alert. It felt like his nervous system was constantly tense ever since the flower delivery on Saturday, as if he couldn’t entirely relax. It didn’t take much for him to go from zero to sixty.
“Don’t worry, it’s nothing to do with Cassidy. It’s personal to me.”Mason hesitated.
Even as David relaxed again, he frowned.
“What do you need?”He couldn’t imagine what Mason would want to talk to him about that was so important. That must have been why Mason had been hanging out at the front desk instead of being back in his office. He definitely had work to do, just like David.
“Remember how I said my parents want to arrange my marriage?”Mason kept his voice low, as if he wanted to ensure no one else overheard them, even though from what David could see, no one else was in the office yet.Maybe he was just worried his voice would carry back to Jennifer, even though they were walking away from her.
