Blaze wet his lips. “You heard me, Alecto. I’m rather bored with you now. It was fun playing around, the whole back and forth between us. But now that I’veconqueredmy goal, things are looking rather dull.”

Anger flashed in her eyes, her cheeks flushed with the raw emotion he was sure was burning her chest right now.

“You’veconquerednothing. Let me assure you of that,” she said, her voice low.

Blaze laughed, hollow and mocking, which only seemed to brighten her hate.

“Oh, sweet Alecto. I played you better than you even know.”

Alecto held his stare, unflinching as his next words came at her. “I’ve hurt you, humiliated you, literally left you to die out in the woods. And what do you do?”

He laughed once more, the cruelty in it shaking his whole body.

Did it feel as painful to her as it did to him?

“You fucking come crawling on your knees at me, dying for that sweet little touch,” Blaze continued. He lifted a hand to caress her cheek, and she allowed it. “You’re pathetic, Alecto. Did you know that? You act all tough and cold, the heartless bitch, but deep down, you’re just a little girl jumping from one asshole onto the next one, desperately trying to find your own worth in men who want you for nothing more than your body.”

He dropped his hand from the silky soft skin of her cheek, his lips curling into a snarl.

To his utter surprise and relief, Alecto searched his face for a moment, calm and collected.

Alecto Black was unbreakable.

Ah, Blaze never wished for that to be true more than right that moment.

When her eyes found his again, one corner of her lips curled. “Damn, Leveau, you should pick up psychology classes next trimester. You’re really good at reading people.”

With one last smirk, she left Blaze’s room, leaving her scent lingering after her.

It was better this way.

They were always supposed to be enemies.

Whatever this game was, whatever Blaze thought he felt for a moment, it was out of hand.

He had more important matters to focus on than playing with Alecto Black.

But then why did the sharp pain linger in his chest?

“Do you have the Book?” Val asked the moment Blaze stepped foot outside his room.

“No. I’ve got better things to do.”

Better things being going to get completely wasted in one of the local bars, preferably in the company of multiple women.

Preferablynotblondes.

Val grabbed his arm, digging in her nails. “I’m serious, Blaze. Forget your fucking little tirade on our way home. This is not something you should mess with.”

Blaze twisted his arm out of her grip. “I’m not fucking messing with anything, Val. I couldn’t give less fucks about your Book or anything else right now.”

The sudden flash of worry on Val’s face was the thing that made Blaze stop in his tracks.

Val never showed any other emotion that she would consider a weakness. Just the fact that she showed this much wasalarming.

“Could the others from the Inner Circle have it?” Blaze asked, but Val was already moving down the stairs.

Blaze cursed, rushing after her.
