Without their lights, the church fell into gloomy darkness, only the candles lighting the space. They flickered as the wind intensified but didn’t blow out.

Galliermo felt it before he could see it. The wave of immense power pushed against him, going past him and the walls of the church. And then the whole space lit up, and he had to close his eyes for fear of being blinded.

Despite the light and the glow, the air around them smelled of wet dirt and…death. It was rotten and bitter, and Galliermo’s stomach churned.

He only opened his eyes when the glow disappeared and the wind died down. Ringing silence surrounded them.

“Is it done?” Galliermo asked, opening his eyes.

Octavia nodded.

“The curse has been placed,” she said. “It’s time to write a love note for the Rats.”

There was a knock on the door.

“Come in!”

Alecto lifted her head from her nails, holding the nail polish brush in her hand, and looked over her shoulder to the door.

Blaze walked in.

“Oh, hey,” Alecto said, putting the nail polish away.

Quickly she murmured a spell to dry the nail polish and stood up. Blaze scooped her into his hands and pulled her into a tight hug. Alecto laughed and wrapped her legs around his waist, hugging him back.

“You’re in a good mood. What’s up?”

Blaze leaned his forehead against hers and whispered, “It’s done. We’re free, baby.”

Alecto blinked, unsure if he meant—

“My plan worked,” Blaze said and smiled. “I got Galliermo to back off. He won’t bother me, or you, or us.”

Alecto squealed and cupped his cheeks in her hands. “No way!”

Blaze laughed and whirled them around. Then he walked up to her bed and fell on it, crushing Alecto beneath him.

“Way,” he said, brushing his nose against hers. “He’s going to be minding his own business from now on. Trust me. You won’t even notice he exists.”

“I love you,” Alecto said, then kissed him. His lips were soft, the kisses gentle. “I can’t believe we’re actually, truly free.”

“You better believe it, baby,” Blaze said. “No more Alatar. And no more Galliermo.”

Alecto laughed, and then Blaze’s mouth was on hers once more.

He kissed her with such intensity and so much passion, Alecto’s whole body was on fire. They peeled each other’s clothing in a rush, breathing heavily between kisses when they managed to pull away for long enough.

The feel of Blaze’s naked skin on hers made her shiver. She savored every touch of his fingers and hands on her back, waist, and hips, every kiss of his soft lips along her jawline, neck, and throat.

“Fuck me.” Alecto breathed out the words over his mouth, fisting his hair at the back of his head. “Now.”

The only answer Blaze gave her was a kiss. And then he took hold of her hips and flipped her on her belly. She loved to feel his weight pressing on top of her.

Alecto gasped when he spread her legs and lifted her hips in the air. She braced her palms on the bed, her back arched. Blaze grabbed the base of her neck, pushing her down as he entered her burning core.

“Oh, you feel so fucking good,” he growled.
