Jolene sighed. “Because they wouldn’t understand. They have been supportive with the majority of the things in my life, but when it comes to my girlfriends I’m a Frone, and they have expectations. They want me to find a girlfriend in our circle.”

“Have they told you that? That they don’t approve of Leigh?”

Jolene shook her head. “Not directly, no. But I am not stupid, and I know them. They don’t have to spell it out for me.”

“I’m sorry,” was all Alecto could say.

Jolene offered her a sad smile.

“Will they be angry once they find out?” Alecto asked.

Jolene shrugged. “I don’t know. I don’t care. I want to be with Leigh, even if that costs me my family and my fortune.”

Alecto nodded.

“We will do a simple ceremony,” Jolene said. “I spoke with Leigh, and we decided to do something here in Darly, maybe in the Blessed Forest. It is pretty there. I like it.”

An idea came to mind.

“You know what, why don’t we throw you the ceremony you both deserve?” Alecto asked, excited. She took Jolene’s hands. “A big, flashy ceremony. A big, fat fuck-you to all who don’t approve?”

Jolene laughed. “We don’t need to do that. You don’t have to.”

“Oh, but I want to,” Alecto said. “I want you to have the ceremony of your fucking dreams, and I want your aunties to be there to witness it. Afterwards, they can be mad or angry or whatever. But you will regret it later if you don’t have them with you on such an important day.”

Jolene’s face softened, tears in her eyes. “Oh, Alecto. But where and how? We want to get married as soon as possible.”

Alecto smiled. “Leave that to me.”

Next stop was Blaze’s room. Alecto didn’t even bother knocking.

She found him splayed out on his bed, facedown. Alecto padded towards the bed and climbed on top of him.

Blaze lifted his head. “Hello, baby.”

“Hi,” Alecto said with a smile. She kissed the back of his neck. “Are you feeling alright?”

Blaze sighed.

“When are you going to see your mom?” she asked him.

“When arewegoing to see my mom, you mean?” Blaze murmured.

“Ah, so it’s me and you?” Alecto teased.

“Me and you, until the end of time, baby.”

Alecto’s chest swelled with warmth and joy. “So, when are we heading there?” Alecto asked.

“I don’t know,” Blaze said. “I’m exhausted. Maybe tomorrow morning.”

Alecto moved off him and onto the bed next to him. “Sounds good to me,” she said, dragging her nails down his back.

Blaze moaned, goose bumps skittering over his skin. “Don’t stop,” he said.

Alecto smiled. “Before we head to your mom’s, we’ll need to make a pit stop,” she said.

Blaze hummed. A moment later he asked, “Where?”
