After all, there wasn’t a better reason for a party in Avalon Hills than to show off how rich, powerful, and beautiful one was.

“I love how thoughtful you kids are,” her father finally said. “Go ahead. Throw a party. If you need information on caterers and other help, just let me know.”

Alecto nodded. “Thank you. We’ve got that covered.”

“Well, I am sure sad to be missing such a party,” Alatar said with a smile. “Especially if you intend on inviting the whole faculty.”

“Well, we’ll see how many people will want to show up,” Alecto said, glancing at Blaze, who had been perfectly silent so far.

“I’m sure once we spread the word, everyone will be more than eager to attend,” Blaze said with a sinister smirk.

“They would be fools not to,” Alatar said. “Now, is there anything else you need, sweet pumpkin? I have to prepare for a call.”

Alecto rose to her feet, and Blaze followed suit. “Nothing more, Father. Thank you.” Before she left, she turned and said, “Have a safe trip.”

Of course, she didn’t mean it. If his carriage crashed on his way to wherever he was traveling to this time, Alecto would be happier than ever.

Next stop was the Leveau penthouse. Alecto was much more nervous this time.

“What if your father comes back unexpectedly?” Alecto asked when they were in the elevator. “He’ll lose his shit.”

“He won’t come back. He’s looking at the properties outside the town all day today,” Blaze said. He caressed her cheek. “Trust me, baby. You’re safe with me.”

“I’m not worried about myself,” Alecto said.

The elevator door opened, revealing a long dim corridor waiting for them.

“And what if she doesn’t like that we’re together?” Alecto asked. “She’s always been sweet. But what if she doesn’t think I’m a good match for you?”

Blaze snorted. “There isn’t a better match for me in all three realms. And if she doesn’t see it, then she’ll have to deal with it.”

He kissed her on the side of her head and then pulled her to the side. They crossed a lounge and another room before they finally reached the green room.

Auburn was humming while she pruned one of her bushes. She wore white cotton gloves, a pair of green scissors in hand.

“Mother,” Blaze said.

Auburn startled, turning around. She pressed her hand against her chest. “Gods, Blaze. You almost gave me a heart attack.” Then she noticed Alecto next to him. “Oh, Alecto, dear. Good to see you.”

“Good to see you too, Auburn,” Alecto said and smiled one of her genuine smiles. For whatever reason, she was desperate for Auburn’s approval.

“This is a surprise,” Auburn said, looking between them. “Don’t you have lectures?”

Blaze went over to the small sage iron table and took a seat. Alecto hesitated for a moment, but then followed his lead and sat.

“We’re here to talk, Mother,” Blaze said.

He lit up a cigarette.

Auburn put the scissors down and pulled the gloves off her delicate hands. Then she came over to the table and took the third seat. She smoothed out the crinkles on her skirt and then folded her hands in her lap. Alecto realized she had been preparing for this moment.

“Very well. What would you like to know?” she said, and for the very first time, Auburn sounded determined.

Blaze blew out the smoke, eyeing his mother. He must have noticed the shift within her as well. “I want you to give us answers and not excuses,” Blaze said. “I want you to be honest, to stop trying to hide and pretend.”

Auburn nodded. “Fair enough. You have my promise. Now, tell me what you would like to know.”

Blaze shot Alecto a quick glance. She nodded.
