“We detect it quicker. Brainwash the asshole bad guys and hope they never do it again.”

“Well, that’s kind of cool.” I shrugged, “I’ll see you tonight then.”

They all sped off, leaving me with the vampires who were apparently in need of feeding and sex. And what would you know, our entire conversation was just that the whole thirty-minute drive back to the house.

Chapter Eighteen

It seemed the entire ride home was non-stop sex talk. These girls sure did love sharing every explicit detail. To say it was an awkward drive home would have been the understatement of the year.

I ran upstairs and changed into a swimsuit that was folded neatly on a shelf in my closet. I threw on a robe and tied it securely to my waist as I headed downstairs.

“God it is cold, maybe I’ll do the Jacuzzi instead,” I said to Sarah as she walked with me outside.

“Warming up for your night with Braden?”

I laughed and looked over at her, she fit the Barbie doll picture to a tee. Long legs, flawless, tanned skin, and wearing a skimpy swimsuit that barely held anything in.

I stepped in the hot swirling water and my skin was covered with goosebumps up to my neck. “Wow, this feels so good,” I said, leaning my head back against the stone ledge.

“I know,” Sarah said in the same voice of relief. “The pool isn’t as hot, but it’s warm enough to enjoy on a cold night.”

“So you guys aren’t immune to hot or cold temperatures?” I asked, keeping my head back and eyes closed.

“Why would you think we were?”

“I guess the whole immortal thing? I don’t know.”

“There are certain things that we can do that put us all above the mortal people, but drinking human blood can give immortal vampires some of their weaknesses.”

I lifted my head and looked at the blonde-haired beauty, “What do you mean?”

Her lips lifted on one side, “It’s not meant to insult you. It’s just a fact. For example,” she looked out at the pool where the other vampires were messing around in the water, “I used to feed on humans a lot before I met Joe. Now, he and I usually feed on each other.” She raised an eyebrow and licked her lips while looking out at a gorgeous, dark-skinned man on the other side of the pool. “It’s extraordinary.” She laughed and looked back at me, “Besides the glorious fucking that comes along with it, it also helps drown out the imperfections that human blood gives us. It’s sort of like charging up our batteries when they’re drained.”

“But you need human blood to survive, right? I thought only the Banners drank from other vampires.”

“Yes, the rest of us require human blood to survive, but the more human blood we consume, the weaker we become. It’s sort of like us taking on different human traits since we have human blood in our system. Basically, we need to have it, but we keep our strength up by feeding on each other as well. Make sense?”

I smiled. “Yeah. I think I get it.”

“Good.” She giggled. “I’m sure you must have a million questions, but take it a step at a time.”

“She’s right,” Val said as she stepped out of the pool and walked toward the hot tub. She smoothed her dark, wet hair back as she stepped into the spa and sank into the steamy water. She looked like one of those lingerie angels you see on the runway. “Definitely take it a step at a time. Things will open up to you the more you accept the life you were fated to be a part of. The guys will break you in on all of the extras too.”

“Yep.” I looked out at Zac diving head first into the pool, “I think all five of us need things to open up to this life thatfatehas given us.”

Val followed my gaze out to Zac. “He’s a hard nut to crack. Don’t let that one get to you. Sexy as hell, yes, but an arrogant dick too.”

The girls laughed, prompting me to also. “I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting a lot of sex talk tonight with girls I just met, but this has been kind of nice.”

“You’re just excited about your new future,” Sarah teased. “No girl in their right mind, human or not, would turn down the attention of any of those Banners.”

“And you, my little human friend,” Val started, “got all four.”

“What the FUCK!” I heard Zac yell.

All was silenced when Zac practically walked on water to exit the pool. My eyes followed him rushing through the open glass sliding doors into the house.

“No!” I said in panic when four guys carried a lifeless Braden into the house.
