“Let’s do it. I’ll send you my address, but you can follow me.”
“Sounds good. See you there.”
I unlock my door, and Linc opens it for me. He closes the door and jogs to his car.
I blow out a breath, my heart racing. I guess we’re doing this.
Chapter Thirty
Linc
The leasing agent unlocks the door to the three-bedroom apartment, and we walk in. I glance around, giving Mel space to explore.
When I saw our baby on that screen, the weirdest feeling came over me. I want to have her and the baby close. Like a primal urge to protect them, I want to know they have what they need, that they’re taken care of and safe. A vision of me following a pregnant Mel around with a loincloth on and a club in my hand goes through my mind. I shake the vision from my mind and laugh.
“What’s funny?”
“Nothing.”
She looks at me like I’m crazy—not the first time.
The agent follows us into the kitchen. “Feel free to look around and let me know if you have questions. I’ll wait in the living area.”
Mel watches him leave the room, then turns to me. “The kitchen is nice. Everything is so new.”
I nod. “They just went through and remodeled the open units. Want to go look at the bedrooms?”
“Sure.”
We walk to the hall and peek into the two smaller bedrooms, then we walk into the master.
I duck into the ensuite. “This would be your room, then the closest smaller one, the baby’s.”
“I don’t need all this space.”
“I want you to be comfortable, Mel. You’ll probably need a bigger closet and you can have the private bath. This is definitely your room.”
“Okay.” She walks around the room, glancing into the closet and out the window. Then she walks over, looking up at me. “You’re really sure you want me here?”
I look into her eyes. “Absolutely.”
“And you’ll tell me right away if you have doubts or change your mind?”
“Do you think I’ll have doubts?”
“This is a big change for you, Linc. Have you ever lived with a woman?”
“No. But this is different.”
“How so?”
“It’s you.”
She narrows her eyes at me as if she doesn’t believe me, but it really is that simple. She waves her arm around the room.
“Do you like it? Should we take it?”
“If you like it, then let’s do it.”
