“You’ll want to do whatever you can to bulk up the managerial aspects—really highlight where you’ve managed projects within the clinic, obviously, but even outside work too, whenever relevant. I know it’s not always possible to acquire the experience until you have the job, so I get it. But I do think you can be competitive.” She smiled kindly.

“Thank you. I’ll do my best.”

We talked for another moment about timelines, and I left her office, nearly climbing out of my skin with excitement.

I practically skipped down the hall, but the excitement plummeted when I ran into someone at full speed—ouch.

“Oh, I’m so sorry.”

Hands grasped my arms to steady me. “No problem, Nurse Applegate.”

My stomach soured. Of all people, it had to be him. Kent Dennin.

“Thanks,” I said, forcing a chuckle and taking a big step away—out of his reach.

“Like I said, no problem.” He held my gaze, then his eyes dipped to my lips and down my front before he held up a hand in a wave.

Cold disgust slithered through me, dousing all sense of excitement over the news from Major Hall. Kent Dennin made my skin crawl. I couldn’t explain it except for the way he looked at me. I’d decided that was enough. I avoided him. He worked in another part of the clinic. He was a sergeant, seemed nice enough to everyone, but I didn’t want his attention.Ofcourse, it’d be him I ran into.

I inhaled, steeling myself, then shoved all that away with a teeth-baring smile. I didn’t need to worry about a leering Kent. I could bask in the excitement of a door opening right in front of me. A door I’d been watching since the moment I arrived and noticed there was only one upwardly mobile employment option for me at this clinic. I loved my job, but if I wanted to stick with my plans and grow my earning potential, I needed to move up. This was it.

I beamed to myself. This is it!
