"It's too late," she moaned in pain.

I felt tears rolling down my face. Rose was the nicest person I had ever encountered. She didn't deserve this. It was eerily quiet.

There were no more gunshots. I didn't hear any cars idling. I poked my head out and saw Vito running down the alley toward me. I stepped out and grabbed his arm. "Rose is losing the baby," I blurted.

I had this sense of urgency. If we could get her to the hospital, everything would be fine. That wasn't what happened, though.

Uncaring of the blood running down her legs, Vito swung Rose into his arms and started to run. I thought he was headed to a hospital, but no, he went to the Falcone compound. Confused, I followed him as quickly as I could, but his legs were longer, so he was faster. He was a block ahead of me, and in New York, that was a long block.

I just kept running, ignoring the pain in my sides. I made it to the compound, but Vito was nowhere in sight. I went inside and headed upstairs because that's where the screaming was. At first, I thought it was Rose, screaming in pain, but it wasn't.

Down the hall, double doors were left open. They were the entrance to an enormous bedroom. A huge canopy bed sat in the middle of the room. Rose was lying in the center with four doctors crowding her. They were just standing there staring at her. Vito was seated on the floor with his head hung in defeat. Nick was screaming at a doctor in the corner of the room. That doctor was shaking his head, over and over again. Rose was shaky and pale. I bypassed everyone and went to her.

"What do you need?" I reached out and she clasped my hand like a lifeline.

"We just wait. They gave me something for the pain and to help me ease the baby." She hiccupped out a sob and I lowered my head to hers, trying to comfort her as much as I could.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry," I murmured to her repeatedly. I kept my voice low and soothing as she drifted off. The yelling eventually stopped, and the doctors eventually filed out, but I stayed on the bed with Rose.

Nick climbed in on her other side and held her close. I waited until they both stayed asleep before I left the room and headed down to my own. This was a terrible day for everyone.

The Russians weren't going to stop. Something had to give, and I was going to figure out a way to make it stop before the ones I was closest with lost their lives.

Chapter 8

Vito

Nick and Rose were wrecked. I knew my sister was strong, but I had never seen how much until today. I never really saw the effects the mafia had on those around me. I was too busy trying to be the perfect son, too busy trying to follow the rules placed in front of me by a tyrant. I was also proud of my little lotus. She really pulled her weight today.

She got Rose to a safer area and stayed there until she knew the coast was clear. She mentioned, over and over, that we needed to get medical attention for Rose, which I did. I just couldn't risk taking her to another hospital. Not with the Russians being so hot on our heels. I was starting to see Nicolo as more than just an ally. I was starting to see him as a brother.

With my father dead and his out of commission for the time being, we'd had to deal with each other more and more. This helped us grow trust, something most leaders in the mafia didn't have. Our alliance was growing closer together. I could see our families merging and blending more. Nick's family had many female cousins who could make good brides for a Picone man.

I rolled over and looked at the clock. It was dark out and I didn't want to be alone. I wouldn't leave the compound while Rose was hurting. What if she needed me? I got off the bed and stalked out of my room. Before I knew it, I was standing in front of the room where Eunji was staying. With more restraint than normal, I knocked lightly on her door.

"Come in." Her sweet, lilting voice brought a shiver up my spine, but I steeled it. I was just here to check on her.

"Little lotus, are you doing okay?" I asked as the door swung slowly open to reveal the woman I was obsessed with, wearing barely any clothing. I choked and clenched my fists to my sides to prevent myself from touching her glorious skin. I looked her up and down, from her bare feet, to the barely-there shorts she was wearing, all the way up to the tank top that she wore over her bare breasts. How did I know she wasn't wearing a bra? Well, her perky nipples were peeking through the cloth.

"I thought you'd already gone to sleep." Her voice was so soft, like she was worried she would disturb someone.

"I couldn't." I ran a hand down my face.

There was so much I needed to do. I shouldn't be here lusting after the one woman who didn't want me, but I couldn't help myself. I moved closer to her slowly, like I was about to approach a wild animal.

"Do you want to stay in here?" Eunji wasn't looking me in the eyes, which wasn't normal for her.

Her cheeks were tinged pink, and I couldn't keep the smug grin off my face. "If it wouldn't be too much of a bother," I sighed, like I didn't want to put her out. The reality was Eunji didn't have a choice. Once she gave me the invitation, I was never leaving.

"No bother, it's fine." She crawled into bed, flashing her peach ass at me.

It was like waving a red flag to a bull. I stripped myself down to my boxers and joined my little lotus on the bed. She gasped when she turned over and saw my bare chest. Her eyes fucked me hard and I couldn't help puffing up so she could get a good look at my body. I took care of it. It was only fair that she gazed on it like she wanted me. Her sweet smell wafted up my nose as she rubbed her legs together to create friction. I groaned and buried my head in her neck. This was not what she needed. She needed sleep.

"Turn over and go to sleep, little lotus," I huskily growled.

She giggled before she turned over and scooted her ass against me. Pure torture. That's what she was doing to me. I could live for that giggle. I had never heard Eunji giggle. She was normally full of sass and fire. Not that I didn't like that, but I also liked that there was another side of her she wasn't showing anyone else but me. Eunji wiggled. I grunted. She wiggled again. I placed my hand on her hip to stop her movements. She just took my hand and moved it between her legs.

"Do you need something, little lotus?" I rasped in her ear.
