I hurried and told her about my suspicions of my uncle sending men to check on me soon, and what that could mean for the girls here at the brothel.
“So, you are telling me, Luna, that more men from your uncle’s pack will be paying a visit to the Hidden Cove Pack again soon, and might show up to my business again to torment my girls?” Lady Vera lifts her thin eyebrow as she looks at me skeptically.
“Yes ma’am. I was hoping that you could maybe warn the other establishments as well. I’m not one hundred percent certain that they will come here, but after what happened to Yasmin, I wanted to warn you just in case. ” I look over at Yasmin laughing with some of the women who work here at the bar, all of them teasing Cedric about his hair, adorning it with different clips and ribbons.
Lady Vera was watching them too, a small smile playing on her lips.
“That girl looks so much happier now. I would never say what happened to her was a blessing, but look at what it led to. She never laughed freely like that when she worked for me.”
I grinned, happy to hear that. “She is very blessed with her mate.”
“She is blessed with her Luna,” Lady Vera chuckles, her heavy bosom bouncing with the action. “I think we all are, Luna. It takes a selfless woman to aid the woman your husband bedded, as well as looking after the others he used to pay for services.”
Val growled in my head at her crude comment, getting more protective of her mate. I’m uncomfortable too, but the fact my husband was a philander in the past can not be changed. It is his current actions that I am trying to judge him on. His current actions are honorable and I have been more than impressed.
It is still uncomfortable to hear of my husband’s past flings, though. I square my shoulders and try to just grit my teeth through hearing it.
“I think you, Luna, are far more than any of this pack deserves, especially that taciturn husband of yours, but I’m happy you remain here, nonetheless. Seeing my girl,” she nods toward Yasmin, “one that I raised from the time she was a child who couldn’t even reach the toilet without a stepstool to the woman she’s become today, who looks so happy and carefree, I feel honored to have you in the packhouse. You saw a broken woman crying out for help when others just saw a hooker paying for the crime of being less fortunate. That man there is not of the wolf kind. He is a siren, is he not?”
I looked at Cedric, who was now watching us curiously, having heard the term ‘siren’, I’m sure. I smiled tenderly towards him, catching the glint in his eye. He is in heaven having all these women to laugh and tease with. He has such a teasing nature and it can get pretty tense at the packhouse with his mate or Lachlan always around.
“He is a siren, but he is my dear friend.”
“That’s what I’m getting at, Luna. This pack is changing for the better with you here. The Alpha would never have welcomed a siren in the castle before you came. I hear words of praise for you all the time because of your loving heart towards the orphans. When testosterone runs high, I’ve heard of you putting yourself in harm's way to protect others. The former Luna would have been so amazed at your strength.” Lady Vera smiled sadly, looking off in the distance, making me think she was recalling memories from the past.
“Did you know the former Luna?” I asked.
“Oh, yes. She was once a dear friend. When I inherited this place, and she met her mate, the former Alpha, we never had the chance to meet afterward. The former Alpha was not like his son. He was more conservative in his beliefs and thought I was too far beneath his mate’s station to ever be granted an audience with her. She was a warrior and was strong physically, but not mentally like you. She didn’t go against her husband’s wishes.” That glint returned to Lady Vera’s eyes. “She would have been quite amused by you. You have the strength this pack needs right now. The strength to stand up against anyone who wishes to cause her pack members harm, even her own mate.”
“I wouldn’t-” I'm about to say I would never need to stand up to my husband in that way, but she cuts me off.
“Oh, what happened at the packhouse because of Yasmin on your first morning at breakfast has been spread to all the pack. Everyone is telling of how heroic you were and how you tamed the beast.”
Embarrassment creeps over my skin. I slapped him. In front of everyone. I would hardly call that heroic. I let my anger flare too. I actually ended up showing how weak I was at that time because of the panic I felt. Cherum had to carry me out of there. It's humiliating to think about now.
“I’d hardly say I tamed him,” I murmured, taking a long sip of my drink. It’s still foamy at the top and cool, the condensation from the glass dipping down onto my front.
“Oh, I hope you did,” Lady Vera grinned widely, “Because he’s here now, and he doesn’t look too pleased.”
I turned my head towards the door, and sure enough, there stood Lachlan with an angry expression on his face. His eyes narrowed at the glass in my hand, making Lady Vera laugh loudly. Many of the women at the bar around Yasmin and Cedric are watching intently, like they are waiting for a show. Cedric even grabbed a bowl of mixed nuts, eating them with a cheerful look on his face.
That look disappears when Meldec and Percy walk in behind Lachlan, both of the men looking as angry as their Alpha. Percy muttered something under his breath and walked towards Yasmin, who just welcomed him with a beaming smile and open arms. Meldec's angry expression vanishes to one of anxiety when Cedric scoffs at his appearance. Those two really should try to have a real conversation soon.
Lachlan still looked angry, staring over at me.
“There wouldn’t happen to be a back door, would there?” I whispered loudly to Lady Vera. I know Lachlan heard me by the deep growl that escaped him.
“Oh, I doubt you will make it in time,” she snickers, taking my beer from me in anticipation of the coming storm.
Lachlan takes long strides toward me, his eyes never leaving mine. When he is right before me, he slides his thumbs into the waistline of his pants and leans back on his heels.
“Excuse me,miss, but have you seenmy wifearound here?” he asked, confusing me.
“Huh?” I tilted my head to the side, not understanding him.
“She is about this tall,” he holds his hand up at his side, “Long, golden hair. She’s got a sweet, timid personality and wouldneverput herself in harm's way by leaving the castle without her guard or escort.”
Oh, he just wants to tease me? I smirked up at him, intrigued by his game. “Nope. Haven’t seen her. She sounds quite boring.”
