“Ela. I’m sorry. That will take some getting used to. I’m not used to dropping formalities with those who are superior to me.”
I snort, “Mimi, I was very much your equal if we are speaking about ranks, up until the moment I said ‘I do’. It makesmeuncomfortable when someone uses polite speech towards me.”
She cocks her head to the side, looking confused. “I thought you were the Alpha of the West’s niece. Does that not make you ranked?”
I grimaced, thinking of my uncle. “My mother was his older sister, the rightful alpha of the pack in most places. She-wolves were not allowed to inherit positions in my previous pack, though. My uncle treated her horribly so she wouldn’t forget her place, and in turn, I was treated as less than an omega.”
“Oh my,” Mimi pressed her hand to her chest, “I had no idea. You must not regard ranked members well then. No wonder you were so reluctant to marry our Alpha, even if you are mates.”
I look at her questioningly. “Mates? He said we were mates?” Val perks up, hope building inside her.
Chapter 10
“Well, not directly, no. He had Beta Nilo tell all the staff you are his true Luna and to treat you as such.”
“Hmm,” I ponder the possibility of him feeling the mate bond like Val suggested. It seems more plausible now.
I twirl the ring around my finger; the wedding ring Lachlan had given me earlier today. Even the ring with this marriage is different. My first was dull and thin. It was a cheaply made ring to match our cheap marriage.
This ring is elaborate and beautiful. It may be the most beautiful accessory I have ever had in my possession. Well, besides the necklace, but Lachlan said that the necklace was given to me by someone else. The individual just asked for Lachlan to be the one to give it to me for some odd reason. I wish I knew who it was from, or wish Lachlan had finished explaining to me why he was the one to give it to me before all those women interrupted him. I would love to know who had access to siren or fae magic.
There is so much difference in this life. Maybe he does feel the mate bond….
“I told you,”Val mutters,, “It wouldn’t hurt to ask him.”
“What if he doesn’t, though? We would be left to explain to him why we asked if he doesn’t feel it, and then we might be forced to tell him we are a hybrid, and could be condemned by his entire pack. Forget freedom. He might put us in the dungeons.”
Val is still wanting me to ask, willing to risk it. I’m not, though. He may be different in this life, but not in the ways that matter. He is still a womanizer and will only hurt us if we give him the chance.
“Okay, Luna-....I mean, Ela. If there is nothing else you need assistance with, I think I’ll leave you to relax for the night.”
I smile sweetly at my favorite person in this castle. “Okay. Thank you for all your help today. I hope you have a good rest of your evening.”
“You as well, Ela,” she smiles, moving towards the door as I grab a throw blanket out of a basket in the corner by the bed and head to finally sit in the winged-back chair. I want to let the waves lull and calm my soul.
Her startled gasp as she opens the door catches my attention and I look up from staring out the window to see her face-to-face with Lachlan.
“I’m sorry, Alpha. I was unaware you were there,” she manages to choke out after recovering from her surprise.
“It’s fine, Niomi,” he smiled stiffly, looking up and meeting my eyes. His smile turns hesitant before looking back down at her. He steps to the side, giving her room to leave, and she hurries along, unnerved by the brief altercation, I’m sure.
“I didn’t expect to see you again tonight,” I say softly, turning to look back out towards the sea. The waves crashing into the shore seemed to be calling me, beckoning me to join them in their dance in the moonlight.
“I told you I wished to share your bed, Elelira,” his deep voice husks, finally calling me by my name. If I didn’t already know better, the way he spoke to me would have made me swoon, the bond I feel swelling with elation.
I do know better, though. This has nothing to do with the bond. He likely just wants my body before going off and having relations with those other women. Curiosity probably got the better of him.
“Fine,” I mutter, , standing to my feet.
I set the blanket on the chair, and made my way over to stand before him, unbuttoning the front of my nightdress in the process. “If this is what you want, let us be done with it. It would be rude to keep the others waiting for you all night.”
“Lira,” he says, reverting back to that damned nickname while stepping forward, resting his hands over mine, stopping my movements. “Stop. I just want to sleep tonight. I’m not here for….forthat.Not until you learn to trust me.”
Val is purring, practically doing somersaults in my head, but I am not convinced.
I scoff. “You really just want to sleep in the same bed as me? Nothing more?”
He nods his head. “Like I said, not until you trust me, Lira. I want your trust before anything else.”
