“They don’t look too deep. I’m going to slowly take out the pieces of pottery, and we’ll bandage everything up. I want you to stay off your feet for several days so they can heal. Can you do that for me?” Aiden asks.

“Nora just got here and is planning on staying for at least a week, so we’ll make sure she stays off them,” Brix replies.

“Hopefully forever,” Elijah mutters, but I still hear it.

They want me to stay forever? But what about what everyone will think? I can’t live my life with people humiliating me at every opportunity they get.

“Like that, is it?” Aiden asks.

“Yes, we’re going to let everyone know,” Elijah grunts. “Just need to convince her as well.”

Convince me to stay with them? I want to laugh and tell them no, but I don’t.

“I’m going to start now, sweetie.” Aiden taps my ankle. “It’s going to hurt a little, but I’ll make sure I’m quick and get everything. Elijah, do you want to hold her other hand so she can squeeze?”

The couch dips next to me, and Elijah grabs my hand.

“Squeeze as hard as you want, little bit,” he murmurs. “I can take it.”

“I’m starting,” Aiden says.

I grip Elijah’s hand as Aiden pulls pieces of the bowl out of my feet. I scream into Brix’s chest, tears running down my face with each hot, searing wave of pain. Biting down onto his shirt, I suck a breath in through my nose but quickly cry out as Aiden removes another piece.

I don’t know how long I sit there, squeezing Elijah’s hand and clenching my teeth on Brix’s shirt as Aiden takes out each piece of the bowl from my feet.

“All done,” Aiden gently says. “Now I’m just going to clean them and bandage you up.”

As Aiden cleans my wounds, it feels like a little prick compared to the searing, hot pain when he was pulling them out. My whole body goes limp in Brix’s lap as Aiden starts to wrap my foot.

“Wow, are you okay?” Brix asks. “Baby, talk to Papa. Are you okay? Why did you go limp? Baby, talk, please.”

But I can’t seem to get any words out. My body and mind are completely exhausted.

“Aiden, what’s wrong with her?” Elijah asks.

My eyes close as they start talking. Flinching, I try to pull my hand away when cold fingers touch the inside of my wrist.

“You’re okay. I’m just taking your pulse,” Aiden explains. “A bit fast, but that is to be expected after everything. She’s just exhausted. Why don’t you give her some milk or a protein drink and put her to bed?”

Whining, I try to push myself off Brix’s chest, but I don’t get anywhere. Exhaustion is weighing me down more with each passing second, and I don’t think I’m going to make it much longer.

“We’ll do that. Thank you, Aiden,” Elijah says.

“You can give her these every six hours. Hopefully, she won’t wake up in the middle of the night in pain. This should dissolve in any drinks you give her. I would give you suppositories, but I’ve just run out and haven’t been able to refill them. If things get worse, call me and I’ll come.” Aiden touches my leg. “It was nice to meet you, Nora. Wish it was under different circumstances. Stay off those feet and listen to your Papa and Daddy.”

I feel Brix moving, carrying me to who knows where like I weigh nothing.

“I’ll give her the bottle and put her in the crib,” Brix gently says.

It’s silent as Brix sits again, placing me in his lap like a newborn. I can’t help but snuggle into his chest and relax as he slowly starts to rock us back and forth.

“Open for Papa,” he whispers. “You’re going to be a good girl and drink all of this.”

I lazily open my mouth and start to suckle the nipple. Chocolate milk floods my tastebuds. and I relax further into his body, drinking and slowly falling asleep.

“Such a good girl.”

Wet.
