“We don’t care either way.” Elijah speaks, calm and even. “It’s up to you and whatyouwant.”
“Can I try it?” she whispers.
A smile forms on my face. “Of course, baby.”
She snuggles her face into my face, and I pop the nipple into her mouth. It takes her a couple of seconds to figure out how to suckle, but before I know it, her eyes are closed, and she’s happily sucking the protein shake.
“Good girl,” I whisper, holding her tighter. “Our good girl.”
Her whole body relaxes against me, and I can’t help but watch her. She is so precious. It takes her no time to finish the bottle and be fully asleep in my arms.
“She gone?” Elijah asks.
I nod, holding her tight. I don’t want to let her go. I never want to let her go. I want her to stay here for the rest of her life with us, being our baby girl.
“Are we going to go after Mateo and Lainey?” he asks, sitting in front of us.
I gaze lovingly at Nora before looking up at Elijah. “Yes. I’m going to ruin their lives.”
A smile spread across Elijah’s face. “Good. Just let me know what you need.”
Nodding, I look at Nora again, unable to keep my eyes off her. I didn’t think we would find someone to share until Elijah told me he was picking up a girl, ourgirl. I felt uneasy, never having met Nora. But I took one look at her, and I knew.
She’s ours.
Possessiveness poured through me the night she got into our truck. We watched her run down the street, pure terror across her face, and I knew then that I would do anything to protect her.
“I’ll contact Kirk to dig up some stuff on them,” I gently speak. “Ruin their lives like they wanted to ruin hers. No one goes after our girl.”
“Our girl,” Elijah whispers.
“Yes,ourgirl. You were right about her.”
A cocky smile pulls at his face. “Of course I was. When have I ever been wrong?”
“When the crazy girl was trying to get into the lodge and you let her, thinking she had changed. Or when you cooked that new recipe three months ago and we both got sick after you said it was fine,” I point out. “Do I need to continue?”
“No.” His face drops. “You don’t need to continue.”
I run my free hand through her hair, Nora snuggling into my chest. “So precious.”
“I told Thorin we’re taking off for a week or two. We’ll be available for some admin stuff, but we won’t be taking shifts,” Elijah says. “He understands and wants us to have a good vacation since we apparentlydesperately need one.”
“We’re going to have to come up with a schedule for us.” I look at him. “We could do twelve-hour shifts. One of us nights and the other days, and we can flip. Or we can get someone to watch her, and we can take nights or days and do long hours.”
Elijah shook his head. “No.”
“No?” I raise an eyebrow.
“I was thinking of telling Thorin that we’ll take the administrative position in security. He’s been looking for someone and has been hounding us both to take it. I think now is a great time to do it since we have Nora,” he explains. “It’s logical. The hours would be less since it would be two of us instead of one. We could take her with us if we both needed to work. It makes sense.”
Thorin, the owner of Whiskey River Mountain Lodge, has been on at us to take the position, but we hadn’t wanted to. We didn’t have a reason to do it. But now… now we have Nora.
“Okay,” I agree. “We’ll tell him so he can start the process of finding our replacements.”
“I’ll tell him now.” Elijah gets up and walks off.
I look down at Nora, smiling and kissing the top of her head. “Everything is going to work out.”
