“Thank you for telling us the truth,” Byron says softly, pressing a kiss to Nicole’s forehead. But when he looks up at me, I see my own rage reflected in his eyes. “It was very naughty to run away and try to take your diaper off, but we can talk about that at home. Right now we need to go back downstairs and deal with this Cassandra business.”
“No! I don’t ever wanna see her again!”
“I understand, princess. But running from your problems never solves anything. You’re going to come downstairs with us and you are going to apologize for pushing Cassie down. And then we will discuss her punishment and yours.”
“Fine. I’ll apologize but I won’t mean it.”
Byron’s lips twitch, and I can’t even blame him. She sounds so much like a petulant Little girl it's almost too adorable for words.
But we can’t letherknow how amused we are by her antics, so I pin her with a stern look. “You will apologize and you will at last make itsoundsincere, or I will strip that diaper off and spank your bare bottom for everyone to see. Am I understood, Nicole?”
Pink blossoms on her cheeks at the threat. “Yes, Daddy.”
“Good girl. Let’s go get this mess sorted out.”
Chapter Ten
Byron
The weight of our Little girl in my arms offers some comfort as I carry her back down to our offices. Rage boils beneath my skin, growing hotter with every passing second when I think of how she was treated this morning.
And it only gets worse when we step into my office and find Cassie slumped in a chair, looking for all the world like the injured party in all this. Marni, on the other hand, is pacing frantically back and forth while Scarlett looks stoically on, her arms folded beneath her breasts.
“Where’s Erica? And what is Marni doing here?” Ezra’s tone is sharp, sharper than I imagine he meant for it to be, and Scarlett raises a brow in response.
“I had Professor Winters come and get Erica. He has a soft spot for her and I thought she could use a bit of pampering after having her session with Byron interrupted so… suddenly. As for Marni, she?—”
Arms crossed in a perfect imitation of Scarlett, Marni jerks her chin up and glares at me and Ezra in turn. “I came to check on Nicky. To make sure she was okay.”
“Nicky?” I can’t help but smile down at the bundle in my arms. “What an adorable nickname. We should have thought of that.”
“Thank you for being a good friend to our babygirl, Marni.” Ezra’s words are pointed, and from the corner of my eye I can see Cassie slide even further down in her seat, embarrassed color rushing to her cheeks.
Good. She should feel embarrassed after the way she behaved.
“You don’t have to thank me for being a friend. That’s just how you’resupposedto treat people.” Marni’s words are even more pointed than Ezra’s, and she adds a glare in Cassie’s direction for good measure.
“Still, we appreciate it. You’re a good girl, Marni.”
Pleasure lights her eyes at my praise. “Thank you, Sir.”
Ezra gives her shoulder a squeeze, bending down slightly to meet her eyes. “I need you to do us a favor, sweetheart. Professor Faulkner should be on his break up on the second floor. Would you mind going and telling him he’s needed in Deputy Headmaster Montclair’s office, please?”
“Oh, but…” Her worried gaze flicks to Nicole, then back to Ezra. “I want to stay with Nicky.”
“If you want to help Nicole, do as I’ve asked.”
Shoulders slumping forward, Marni nods. “Yes, Sir.”
With that, she hurries from my office, and the sound of her Mary Janes slapping against the tile floor fades into the distance.
Ezra steps into the middle of the room, and it’s as though the air itself focuses on him. He has that way about him, of drawing all the attention in a room without even trying. It’s one of the things I fell in love with first, that pure magnetism.
I quietly set Nicole on her feet, though I keep my arms wrapped protectively around her as Ezra speaks.
“We have heard Nicole’s version of this morning’s events. Cassandra, would you like to tell me what happened?”
Crossing her arms over her chest, Cassie pouts prettily up at him, as if that might somehow save her. If even half of what Nicole told us is true, little Cassie is in for a much overdue wake up call.
