But she ignores Sadie. “What are you thinking?”
My face heats. “What do you mean?”
“Like, do you like him?”
My nose starts to burn, and I look away like a coward. I can only nod, but when Missy yelps, I look up to see that Sadie has smacked her. They lock gazes, and they have a silent conversation I’m not privy to. Missy leans back, shaking her head. “He wasted no time, huh?”
I don’t understand. “What do you mean?”
She sighs deeply before meeting my gaze. “I don’t remember much from that night with him.” Shit, I don’t want to know about this. Before, I didn’t care, but now…now, the thought of her with him makes me stabby. I clench my hands together and find that I’m holding my breath. She eyes me and shakes her head once more, a small smile playing on her lips. “Cool it, sissy. I don’t want your man.” Sadie snorts as Missy goes on. “I was ten sheets to the wind on buttery nipples, and I was so tired of all the guys in this place. I can’t even tell you why I chose to come on to Dean. I think I just did it ’cause he was there and I was horny.”
“Yeah, not a fan of this,” I mutter, and Missy just laughs.
Sadie gives me a sympathetic look. “How do you think I feel? Both my best friends have slept with my brother.”
When she gags a bit, I groan, letting my head fall back as Missy laughs. “At least she can remember what she does with him. Me, I couldn’t tell you anything other than one thing.”
I lift my head, intrigued. “One thing?”
Probably his dick. Damn thing is massive, but I don’t want her to talk about it.
Her face fills with color, but she doesn’t look away. She looks so self-conscious, and I’m confused until she says the next part. “When he came, he grunted your name.”
My mouth parts, and Missy shakes her head. “Yeah, I was so embarrassed. And while I already knew it was a really bad idea, him moaning my sister’s name as he came inside me was the icing on the cake.”
My jaw drops more, but Missy just laughs. “So, we didn’t talk after because he knew I heard him. And when I came up pregnant, I told him I wouldn’t marry someone who was in love with my sister. That we’d have to raise our child together, but we’d never be together.” My heart stops dead in my chest. “And you know what he said?”
I can only shake my head, unsure if I’m even breathing at this point. It’s Sadie who takes my hand in hers and says, “He said that was good with him because he wouldn’t marry anyone but you.”
Tears well in my eyes as I look away, trying to process what they just said.
This happened seventeen years ago. Something isn’t clicking here for me. “He moaned my name?”
They both laugh as they nod. “He sure did, and he didn’t even apologize.”
“Why would he? He doesn’t do anything he doesn’t want to,” Sadie laughs, leaning back in the seat. “Probably imagined Kenni the whole time.”
“Wow, thanks,” Missy says, but she’s not offended. She’s laughing. “It was the lowest moment of my life, but we got Skyye.”
“He liked me?” I ask, so blown away by all this.
Sadie arches a brow. “Like? Kenni, my brother has been head over boots in love with you since we were kids.”
Missy snorts. “So much so, I’m surprised you were here a month before he made his move.”
I blink, unable to accept what they’re saying, but…it makes sense. I’ve felt his adoration, his eyes that are only ever on me. Even when we were younger, I felt them. I craved them, but he never made a move. I don’t get it. If he felt so deeply for me that he’s moaning my name when he’s with my sister, then why didn’t he tell me?
Why didn’t he come after me?
Why didn’t he make me his before Stratford got his claws into me?
CHAPTER
THIRTY-EIGHT
Dean
I hadn’t planned on stopping by Sheriff Willie Colburn’s home, but when my daughter requests my presence, I show up. My radio sits at my hip, just in case, and everyone at the station knows that I’ll join them if anything arises. Not that it should.
