“Oh, did you think up that line all by yourself?”
His smile faltered slightly then he laughed outright. “Yeah, not original for sure.”
I loved the sound of his laugh and I knew just by using his smile women would drop their panties as if on cue. I’d met his type. Some men thought because they were good looking that I wouldn’t charge them. Sort of a…if looks could buy you anythingtype of philosophy. However, I could not agree even if I’d wanted to as I owed O more than half my take. And as they saya girl’s gotta eat. I shook my head. Why was he flirting with me anyway? I just didn’t get it. “So let me see what lines are left that might work…” I pondered this.
He kept chuckling. “No need for that.”
“No, no.” I raised my hand at him. “You need help, man.” I tapped my chin with my forefinger. Then I remembered a few.
He shook his head as he kept grinning at me.
“No, really I have some good ones.” I smiled at him. “Like…Well, here I am, so what were your other two wishes?”
He laughed. “Good one.”
“Or… there’s something wrong with my cell phone. It doesn’t have your number in it.”
He chuckled. “Wow. Good ones. Ok, I think I got the hang of it.”
“Alright. Shoot.” I was beginning to like this conversation especially after the last day or two, I had been on edge. It really cheered me up for some reason.
He leaned in close and whispered, “Aside from being sexy, what do you do for a living?”
First off, I caught a whiff of his scent and it made my brain freeze up and the feel of his hot breath so close to my cheek then melted that freeze.Wow.I knew I got a bit moist in my own panties.Dang.Then I realized what line he used. What did I do for a living? All of my previous amusement dried up as I leaned back. The question was the last one I expected him to ask, or wanted him to ask.
Redemption pulled away as he looked confused. “What? I know that one is rare.”
Maybe in his world but not in mine. What I used to do for a living…he could never know about. I tried to cover my rudeness as I answered truthfully, “I bartend.”
He stared at me. “Yeah?”
I nodded. I’d been a woman of the night then a stripper for a couple of months, but there was no way I would give this man my unsightly resume.
“So I gather you have heard many, many pickup lines?” he asked. “Female bartenders are a prime target for that.”
“I got hit on some,” I said. “But it was a good job.”
“So did you quit or what?”
I raised my head to gaze at him. “What is with the sudden interest in me?” I just asked my burning question outright.
He stared at me. “Sudden? No, I have been curious from the first minute I saw you.”
“Look, I’m here under the Walker’s protection,” I tried to tell him the truth but not the whole truth.
“I gathered that much.”
I shrugged.
“So you are close to the Walkers?”
I felt a little angry at him pressing me, but I decided the truth in part would do here, “Talon. I knew Talon. He helped me once and then I returned the favor.” I shrugged.
“Interesting…” He stared at me.
“No… really, it’s not.”
He stepped close to me again and grasped a fallen lock of my hair to rub it between his fingers. “To me, you are more than interesting.”
