Redemption glared at him. “We want to know why our sister Glory was fucking kidnapped and the ransom is not money, it is a person.”
Talon looked confused.
“Can we come inside and sort this out?” Jarret interjected.
Talon glared back at the angry looking Redemption then looked over at who was supposed to be his uncle. “Yeah…” He looked up and called out, “Open the gates.”
The guard gave him a nod and the gates opened up.
“Thank you,” Jarret said.
“You can park your bikes over by the south barn,” Talon said. “Follow us.” He turned and got onto his ride. Waving his hand in a circle above him at the Rebel Saints on bikes, he motioned for them to follow.
We watched the screen as all the vehicles moved along the driveway. I looked over at Ma, Sofia and Rip. “What is happening?”
Rip slowly shook his head. “I really don’t know but… I’m guessing O is behind this.”
Ma kept shaking her head. “Never thought I’d see the day…” She still looked a bit pale.
Rip stared at her. “I’m confused Ma. It looks like Talon and the rest of them are too.”
Nodding, she wrung her hands together. “He left…Um, the day Jacob and I got married. We never heard from him again.”
“Then he shows up all of the sudden?” Sofia asked.
“That part about Glory…” I spoke up. “Isn’t that what O has been singing for days now. Glory Hallelujah?”
“Yeah, and you can bet that is not a coincidence,” Rip said in disgust.
Ma turned and rushed from the room.
Sofia, Rip and I all stared at the empty doorway.
“Seems that Ma is really upset about this,” Sofia muttered.
Rip looked troubled. “How could none of us know about this Jarret? He really looks like Uncle Jacob. Well, if he had lived, that is.”
Sofia paused. “I do remember that name though, my parents said it a few times when I was a kid.”
“Yeah?” Rip asked. “What did they say?”
Sofia shrugged. “That’s just it, when they saw I was listening they quit talking about him. I mean I didn’t think anything of it at the time.”
Rip sighed. “Come on, let’s go and see what this is all about.” He grabbed Sofia’s hand.
“Can I come?” I asked.
He gave me a nod. “Sure.”
I followed them out and down the hallway. I was an outsider here, not part of the family, but they had welcomed me anyway. I did have an interest in all of this though. O was having me hunted down and the Walkers took me in. In truth, I’d been dragged here after Rip and Talon grabbed me up from the Top Hat bar where I worked. The thing was I couldn’t leave here until O was taken care of. Like taken to prison or being six feet under. I hoped for six feet, because if she got free, I would be dead myself. No one leaves her or double crosses her, and she considers leaving her the same as a betrayal.
We walked across the ranch. The place had to be the most beautiful property I ever saw. Yes, I grew up in Ramton, but I’d never seen anything like the Walker ranch. Flowers everywhere and green too. Tall cooling trees, a pond, a river and lots of woods. I paused and looked back at the porch.
Ma stood there and she still looked spooked.
I had only known Ma for about a week but she was the kindest woman I had ever met. It was astounding to realize she was O’s sister. In fact, I still had a hard time believing it. Ma was like an angel and O was the devil. Ma always wore a smile and had a funny way of saying things. Like the ole southerners did. She even seemed to bounce back after O had been caught and they all found out that she was Ma’s sister. From what I understood, Ma Walker had been through a lot of tragedy and most of it had been caused by her sister. She loved her kids though and she said that had gotten her through it all. Right now though, she looked upset. This Jarret and his son’s arrival had done that.
As we came closer to the barn where all the bikes and vehicles had parked, we could hear loud voices.
