“Could that be for real?” I asked Talon. “He has a sister in on this with him?”
He shrugged. “Hell, I don’t know, but that means we have more than just Deacon to deal with. So that is not good news for anyone.”
“Wait a minute, he introduced her as his sister?” I asked Belle.
“Yeah and she hates you all,” Belle said. “She never tried to cover that up when she talked about her mom’s death.”
“Fuck.” Talon let out a breath as this news did unsettle him. “When he introduced you, did he tell you her name?”
Belle paused. “Um, no. He just said, this is my sister and she can tell you all about what happened to our mother.”
Talon shook his head. “A name would have been handy.”
“Like either of them would tell the truth about anything.” I scoffed.
“Maybe, but we could have had Logan and Liv track her name down,” Talon said as he looked around. “Ok, we need to get ready. No telling how long we have.” He motioned to Belle. “That phone’s been here for more than an hour.” He looked over at me. “This place has a basement, so Liv tells us. You need to get these two.” He motioned to Belle and Scarlet. “Down there.” He glanced at Liberty. “Head to the kitchen and get some supplies. Like water, chips or whatever’s there. Make sure they have lights.”
Liberty nodded.
“Oh, no.” Belle stood from her chair. “I can’t…”
We all looked over at her.
“Why not?” I asked her.
Scarlet grasped my arm. “She… well—”
“I don’t do good with basements,” Belle blurted out.
“Come on, it won’t be that bad,” Liberty said.
“I won’t go.” Belle crossed her arms over her chest.
Talon shook his head. “Look, we don’t know what’s coming. It might be a ground attack, but it could also be missiles from those damn helicopters he owns. So, you girls need to—”
Belle raised her hand up at him, cutting his words off. “So he could drop a missile on the house?” Her face paled a bit.
“Yes, he could and he would.” He stared at her.
“A-and that would mean we’d be trapped…” Her voice fell away as her hands trembled.
“But you would be alive,” Liberty told her.
“No…” Shaking her head, she looked around. “Can’t we hide somewhere else?”
“Why are you always so difficult?” Liberty asked in disgust. “I mean you were underground with Deacon at that quarry.”
Turning her head, she glared at him. “The area was huge, not like a basement. But even then when we went down I felt…” She shook her head and looked away.
“Look, she cannot go into a basement,” Scarlet stated. “She was trapped in one for two days when she was seven, ok? It isn’t because she’s trying to be difficult.”
“Damn,” I muttered as we all seemed to get it now.
Talon looked frustrated as he pinched his nose with his fingers. “We can’t have you girls anywhere near this battle.” He paused as he seemed to listen to his comm.
“Oh, shit,” Liberty said as he heard it too.
I dug into my pocket and got my earpiece out. Putting it on, I could hear Logan’s voice, “They are a few miles out.”
