“Just try to calm down,” Liberty soothed. “His pulse is steady and he’s alive.”
“Move over,” Ranger said to Liberty as he went around to the other side of Justice.
Liberty did so real quick as he told him, “I pressed on the wound as long as I could to stop the bleeding.”
“You did good,” Ranger replied distractedly as he carefully tore Justice’s shirt open a bit to check Justice’s shoulder. Next, he checked his vitals.
I waited with my heart literally in my throat as I held Justice’s hand.
“He’s hanging in there,” Ranger finally spoke. “But I can’t tell if the bullet is still in there or not. I don’t want to turn him over right now. If we jostle him, his bleeding might start up again. Loss of blood is why he passed out.”
“No jostling?” Belle asked as she stood above us. “Well, he can’t go back in that damn jeep then.”
“We need to get him to a doctor,” I urged.
“Can’t do that,” Talon came over the comm. “Deacon will be watching for just that type of move after this attack.”
“Then we have to get him to Ma,” Ranger said.
Nodding my head, I agreed, “Cinnamon and Jewel said she was almost as good as a doctor.”
“She is,” Talon replied.
“Is it safe to go home?” I asked.
“Logan has some men out searching the roads for any possible tails,” Talon said.
Liberty looked up at Belle. “You still got that phone?”
She nodded. “Why?”
“Cause you can’t keep it, sugar.,” he replied. “Unless you want to call yourboyfriend.”
“Liberty!” I exclaimed. “That’s mean, you can’t be—”
“What?” Belle interrupted me. “An ass? Yeah, he can be.” She rolled her eyes then took it from her pocket. “Here.” She held it out to him.
He took it and removed the back, taking the tracker out. Then replacing the back, he handed the cell back to her. “You know, it can be a keepsake or some shit.”
She yanked it from his hand and glared at him.
Liberty took a few steps away from us and tossed the tracker a couple of feet away on the sandy ground. Taking out his handgun, he aimed and hit it as the small tracker blew apart.
Belle jumped at the gunshot as she yelled, “Did you have to do that?”
He shrugged. “Ground’s too soft here to crush it.” He looked back over at her. “Besides, I like using a gun.”
“Yeah, I can see that. Overcompensating much?” she quipped.
He paused and stared at her. “Funny girl.”
I couldn’t believe they were bantering while Justice laid here passed out from blood loss.
“Can you quit being so loud, Lib?”
I looked down to see Justice had his eyes open. “Justice!”
“Shhh,” he whispered. “Can’t a guy grab a nap in peace?” He grinned up at me.
