I was now under that microscope, the same one Belle had put me under. I didn’t care, she might as well know my intentions with her daughter as soon as possible. I met her gaze with mine. “It’s nice to meet you.” I gave her a nod.
“Well, he looks genuine.” Her mother shrugged.
I blinked at her.Genuine?
Scarlet laughed. “As opposed to what, Mom?” Then she raised her hands up. “No, don’t answer that. I know my history with men isn’t great. But he isn’t anything like them.”
Her mother nodded as she kept staring at me. “Only time will tell.”
I stepped down from the truck seat and stood to face her. No time wouldn’t tell. I would.
“Justice! You are not supposed to move around like that!” Scarlet exclaimed in concern as she came over and grabbed my arm.
I didn’t look at her. Instead, I met her mother’s suspicious gaze. “I will tell you the same thing I told Belle. I’ve never been in love before and I think it was because none of the women I knew was Scarlet. I plan to make every day of her life a joy. The fast marriage part is because I can’t wait until she’s my wife. I don’t think of her as anything except a gift. One I may or may not deserve, but I will protect her from harm and if anyone hurts her, they will be sorry. You see, if you end up not accepting me, it will hurt, but it won’t matter. All that matters to me is Scarlet.”
Her mom’s mouth actually popped open as she stared at me.
Ma Walker came up next to her and she chuckled. “You are looking at the real deal, Lydia.” She patted her arm. “I know men like this one are rare nowadays, but you have to remember, he is a Walker. Through and through. So, I think you and I ought to plan this wedding together.”
Lydia slowly shook her head. “Well, goodness gracious,” was all she could seem to say.
Scarlet giggled. “Well, this is a first.”
I looked over at her. “For what?”
“You rendered my mother speechless. A hard thing to do in my world.”
Lydia smiled for the first time since she walked out here. “He did. I have to agree.”
Scarlet gave her a nod. “Well, if you will excuse us, I have to get him into bed.”
I sucked in a deep breath at her statement.
“Oh, my God!” Scarlet slapped her hands over her very red face. “No, I-I meant…Oh, wow!”
“I’m supposed to play the invalid for a day or so,” I explained to both of the women. “But I have to admit, I did like the way that sounded.” I winked at them.
Ma laughed. “Oh, my holy stars! You are a hoot, Mr. Lawyerman!”
Lydia still looked a bit shocked then her gaze shot over to Ma. “He’s a lawyer?”
“Why sure he is.” Ma nodded at her. “His pa named him Justice and it took.”
“Wow, but he’s a biker too?” Lydia asked.
Scarlet finally seemed to get past her embarrassment. “Yes and he is everything to me, Mom. So just try to accept this ok?”
“I’m good,” her mother said. “But what did Belle say?”
“I think the jury is still out on that one,” I replied.
“No, it isn’t,” Belle said as she stepped up. “He really does love Scarlet. He saved his brother’s life and that's why he got shot. From what his brother said, he rode in a car trunk for more than an hour just to keep Scarlet close to him and fromgetting hurt. And he looks you in the eye when he talks to you. Those other two never could when I met them.” She shrugged. “Apparently, Prince Charming does exist.”
This time, I was the one who felt gobsmacked as I stared at Belle.
“And now you have caused a first in our family too,” Liberty spoke up. “You rendered my brother,Prince Charming, speechless!” He laughed.
Belle rolled her eyes and said, “This one on the other hand…Is annoying, wild, loud and did I say annoying?”
