Chapter 16

Devil's Food Cake

Itold Adam he could take Lacey home if he wanted after the man dropped Knox and me at the house.

Knox pulled me into the kitchen and helped me out of my coat. He told me to sit while he went through the fridge.

When he turned around, he presented me with another white box.

His hands shook as he set it on the island.

I removed the top and smiled slowly at the large piece of Devil's food cake. I took a deep breath as all the pieces clicked into place.

The images on Instagram, the dms, the moment in the golf cart the day he arrived with Foxhound. Oh, the proof was there, but I wasn't paying attention.

Knox was KnightTimeDanc3r.

He was the only one who knew about the cake.

"Please don't be angry," Knox whispered.

"How did you manage to get this?" I asked, avoiding an accusation. Knox listened to me. Paid attention to me. Defendedme. No, I wasn't angry. The man had a hard enough time talking to me in person.

"Adam helped me." His brown eyes were wide as he watched me. "I didn't know how to talk to you. He caught me watching you the first afternoon you started working at the playhouse. Started to take my phone after going through the images. Then, he told me to talk to you."

"So, you started a chat through Instagram." I stood then and moved around the island to get a fork. He turned with me, as if he thought I might hit him.

"Yes. When I knew you and Jasper weren't together anymore," he whispered.

"Saying things you couldn't tell me to my face."

"Yes,"

I sat back down and took a bite of the cake. It was the expensive kind, with an explosion of rich and creamy dark chocolate from the first bite. He didn't get the kind with the white icing. Didn't make a half-hearted attempt to please me. "This is really good."

"I'm glad you like it. Are you upset with me?" He stood there, tapping that thumb against his thigh.

I made him nervous. Me. Part of me couldn't believe it.

"No, I'm not upset. You listen, Knox. You pay attention." I held a bite out for him, and slowly, he leaned across the island to take it. Those full lips closed around the fork, and dammit, I envied the metal. "Are you angry with me for not realizing it sooner? I mean, K-Knight, D-Dancer. What's the three?"

"Oh, well, we had an older brother who died when he was two. Lana is three minutes older than me, too." He shrugged. "So, three."

I smiled. "And I was the friend you spent the night with instead of going to the barn party."

"Yeah."

"You called me beautiful the next morning."

He blushed then and closed his eyes. "Josh, I-"

"Knox? I am not angry or upset. You're nervous. I make you nervous. That one is still hard to believe because I'm just me. Nobody really."

His eyes flew open then, and he frowned. "You are Josh Graeme, a damn good actor even though you won't admit it, level-headed, and smart. You put up with Lacey, understanding there was a reason she was such a bitch. You gave me a ride that afternoon and bought my food too. Oh, I know it wasn't because you thought it was a date. You were being nice. But that's the thing. It's just you. How you are. I love that."

I closed the box after eating half the cake and put it back in the fridge. Knox flinched when I dropped the fork in the sink. "Did you get me a teddy bear, too?"

He shook his head.
