Chapter 18

Just This

Adam found me in the office this morning after I cleaned Roman's stall, and the man took five minutes to get the words out after setting my coffee on the desk. He paced into the room and out, and finally I turned the chair to face him. "So, are you quitting?"

He stopped and turned around slowly. "I don't want to, no. Colin is marrying Anni, so I was hoping-"

"I'm good with that. Just don't tell her my business, if you're officially my guard."

He laughed. "Done."

"Cool. I need a favor."

He arched a brow. "What's that?"

"I want roses for Knox. For after the performance tonight? Unless you think it's a bad idea."

"No, actually, I think it's pretty good. That boy's been after you for years, and then Jasper got in the way."

"Jasper's your brother, Adam."

"Yeah, well, Jasper was promised to Lana before he came onto you. Don't get his motivation for all that. Maybe he thought you would fight for him. I don't know." He shrugged.

"Huh." I didn't want to discuss it. "Cool. Flowers?"

He nodded. "I'll do that. He won't see them either until after. Oh, and the Daniels will be there. MacDaniels hasn't disowned him. You giving Knox roses will start that conversation with Ian about a wedding. Anni's pregnant, so there shouldn't be an issue with you marrying him."

I took a deep breath and then stood because it didn't quite make it.

"Oh, hey." Adam stepped up to me and stroked my cheekbones before he started counting. I joined him on the five, and he nodded, only stopping when we reached ten. "You are like Ian, aren't you? It's okay. I get that. Sandra was a piece of work. Couple Grandma not-so-dearest with Ethan Guthrie, and that's a bad combination. Calm down, drink your coffee, and I'll take care of the flowers."

"Thank you," I murmured, and sat while he left the office.

He was right. I was making declarations. Big ones.

We didn't date in the clans; we married. It was expected.

Wow, my life had changed in a matter of days!

I could do this, couldn't I?

The door to the apartment opened and closed softly before Knox peered around the door. "Are you okay?"

"Why do you ask?"

He stared at the floor for a moment before mumbling, "I'm not sure." He raised his gaze to mine then. "I just felt like you needed me."

I smiled. "I did, yeah."

"What can I do for you?" he asked as I stood and pulled him farther into the room. I slid my arms around his waist and sighed.

"Just this."

Chapter 19

Miann Cridhe

It was a mad rush backstage to get everything done before the curtain rose.
