We talked about other things. My new room mostly; the games Uncle Ian gave me to go with my gaming system, and the books lining my shelves.
Jasper didn't read. Then again, he had friends before he met me. I hadn't stopped him from seeing them; he just didn't.
Knox, however, did read, and I knew he was popular in high school, so Jasper's excuse made no sense.
Did we really have nothing in common?
Knox laughed, bringing me back to the conversation, and I smiled.
Maybe I didn't need lessons. Maybe Jasper never liked me at all, but he needed me.
Please don't let Knox need me for something?
I took him home at midnight, parking beside the steps in the horseshoe drive. He lived in a white, two-story with a front porch that spanned the front of the house from what I could see in the dark. One porch swing, two ladder-back rocking chairs, and the double-hung screen door told me the house was old. Most people had single doors on newer homes.
“So, could I have your number?” he asked, watching the windows.
“Sure.” I handed him my phone, and he put his number in it. His cell vibrated just as the front door opened and light spilled onto the gray floorboards. He leaned over and brushed his lips over mine, pausing for a moment to stare at me before kissing me again.
The screen door slammed against the frame, and he jerked away before climbing out.
MacDaniels stood there watching me, hands on his hips, and mouth open in shock.
Knox hurried into the house, and I drove away before MacDaniels could say anything to me.
I had a strong suspicion Knox had set me up, but I couldn’t decide if he was saving me or himself.
Chapter 6
Confessions
Made it home by one in the morning, and went through the motions of going to bed. Sleep still didn't come, and I stared at Jasper's side of the bed.
The night had been a strange trip into uncharted territory. Was it too soon to be kissing someone else? Shouldn't I have told Knox no? Then again, Jasper was probably cozied up to Lana right now, so why was I even thinking about it?
My phone vibrated on the charger as if on cue, as@KnightTimeDanc3rleft me another message. Did the guy have Joshdar?
@KnightTimeDanc3r: How was your night? I'm sorry Lacey was such a bitch today. She's a little scary when she does stuff like that.
@Jo.GraemePlace: She is scary, but it's not the first time a girl made fun of me. I can see why she isn't married, though. Did you go to the barn party?
@KnightTimeDanc3r: No, I didn't. Spent my night with another friend who didn't go. We are both sort of in the same place right now.
@KnightTimeDanc3r: Did the rest of the night go well?
@Jo.GraemePlace: Confusing, really. I'm not sure how I feel about it.
@KnightTimeDanc3r: Wanna talk about it? I won't tell anyone.
I took a deep breath and stared at the screen. If I told him, Knox might be angry. Didn't know if he wanted anyone to know he'd kissed me. It was probably just a dig at his dad, anyway. Though his father was a Mac, and I was Ian's heir, so the kiss was a big deal. Oh God! What did that mean?
@KnightTimeDanc3r: Are you okay? You're quiet.
@Jo.GraemePlace: I'm not okay, no.Soafter rehearsal, I took someone home.
@KnightTimeDanc3r: Knox. I saw that. He was really cool defending you like that.
@Jo.GraemePlace: He was, yeah. So, I gave him a ride. Sylvie rode with me,too, because she lives in my house. We aren't together. She's older than Ian, and she's gonna be in the new movie.
