Harold stiffened instantly, a nervous flush creeping over his face. “He’s coming here?” he asked, voice tight.
“Yes, he’ll be here soon,” Emily answered.
Harold grabbed his coffee cup and stood abruptly. “I need to go. Important things,” he blurted out, then hurriedly slipped out of the coffee shop, shouting behind him for her to hear before he disappeared out the door. “I’ll treat you next time!”
Emily watched him leave, confusion in her eyes.
Outside Café Amour, a car pulled up and came to a stop. Lucas stepped out, Taylor following behind. Lucas’s eyes immediately landed on Emily, who was still sitting inside the coffee shop.
Turning to Taylor with a proud smile, Lucas said, “See? I told you she’d be waiting for me. Even though she hasn’t replied to my texts, she still has me in her heart.”
Taylor slipped his hands into his pockets, his expression tightening as he glanced at Lucas. “Are you sure she’s waiting for you?” he asked quietly. “That party outfit, no messages… she might be waiting for someone else.”
Lucas’s eyes flashed with anger as he snapped, “Are you trying to make me angry on purpose?” He straightened his shoulders, adjusted his jacket, and started walking toward the café. Taylor took a deep breath, shaking his head in tension, then followed close behind.
With confident eyes, Lucas told Taylor, “You’ll see soon enough who she’s waiting for.”
Chapter 16 Stop Being Angry
Entering the café, Lucas headed straight to Emily’s table, but her attention wasn’t on him. She stood up to step outside and wait for Sebastian. However, just as she lifted her head, she saw Lucas approaching.
She instantly took a step back, surprise flashing in her eyes. “What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice tense.
Lucas closed the distance and stopped right in front of her. “What’s that supposed to mean? You got my message, didn’t you?” he said, eyes sharp. “That’s why you’re waiting here for me?”
Emily stared at him, completely shocked. “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” she said, taking another step back to put more space between them.
Lucas’s lips pressed into a tight line as a flicker of anger crossed his face. “I don’t believe you. Why are you lying? You’re standing right here, at the placeI asked you to meet, and now you’re saying you’re not waiting for me? Do you even believe yourself?”
Emily took a deep breath, summoning all her patience. Then, with steady firmness, she said, “It’s none of your business whoI’m waiting for or why I’m here. But I’m definitely not here for you.”
Her eyes narrowed. “Why are you even texting me to meet? I already told you to stay away. We’ve broken up. There’s nothing left between us.”
Lucas didn’t look convinced or pleased, but he held back his annoyance. He hadn’t been able to talk to her for days. Now that she was finally here, he didn’t want to start another argument.
‘I’ll be the bigger person and ignore her words. She did come to see me after all, even if she denies it. I’ll take that as a step toward me,’ he thought, calming himself down.
He took a step closer to her. “Can’t you stop being angry?” he pleaded. “I know the last few months have been rough. What happened was bad for us, but I know you still love me. Staying away from each other will only make our problems worse.”
He reached up, trying to slide his hand behind her head to pull her close, but she sharply lifted her wrist and pushed his hand away. Taking another step back, she kept her distance.
Pain flashed across his eyes, his body stiffening as if struck, but he quickly shoved his hands into his pockets, clenching his fists, struggling for control.
He looked at her again, voice quiet and soft. “Emily, I know I hurt you because of what happened at the event... but you’re the one I love more than anything in this world. I have no interest in anyone else. Please, just come back home. We can talk, figure out how to fix this.”
His voice softened further.
“We’ve loved each other for five years. I know you don’t really want to stay away from me. I know your every reaction. You can’t even sleep alone in a bed without me, let alone leave me.”
Emily drew in a slow, steady breath, gathering every ounce of calm she could. She was already tired of repeating herself.
“Lucas,” she said, voice calm but icy with finality. “It’s over!”
She sidestepped Lucas and stepped out of the café, heading toward the hotel. But after only a few steps, she stopped abruptly—someone was standing right in front of her.
Looking up, she saw Sebastian, still dressed in the black suit from that morning.
“You’re here,” she breathed, almost overwhelmed by how devastatingly handsome he still looked.
