Startled at first, Sebastian quickly composed himself, his voice unbothered. “I was just looking out the window.” A lie delivered as casually as if it were the truth.

Emily’s face burned hotter by the second. Her chest tightened under Adam’s frown, the unspoken danger of being caught. Abruptly, she pushed back her chair and stood. “I’m thirsty. I’ll get some water.” Without waiting for anyone to notice her red face, she hurried toward the kitchen.

Seconds later, Sebastian’s chair scraped back as well. “Excuse me,” he said calmly, “I’ll just freshen up.”

He also walked away, disappearing from the Crawfords' eyes. But instead of heading toward the hallway washroom, he veered straight into the kitchen.

Emily had just lifted a glass of water to her lips when Sebastian appeared. Before she could react, his hand caught her wrist, pulling her back against the counter. The glass was plucked from her hand and set aside with a quiet thud, and then his body crowded in against hers.

Her eyes widened. A sharp gasp left her mouth as she glanced desperately toward the door. “Are you crazy? My parents are right outside—”

Her words died on her lips as his mouth captured hers. His lips crushed against hers with urgent heat, his tongue slipping over hers, claiming and teasing in equal measure. She felt the press of his teeth against her bottom lip, the slick slide of his tongue tracing hers, and a jolt of heat surged through her.

Her hands flew to his shoulders, pushing, but his grip tightened, one hand sliding to the back of her neck to tilt her closer.

“Don’t—” she whispered, breathless, trying to pull back as he leaned in closer. “If my family sees, they’ll kill us both.”

But Sebastian only leaned in again, kissing her harder this time, until she was breathless, trembling against the counter. When she finally managed to slip out from under him, she pressed a hand over her lips, shaking her head, and darted out of the kitchen.

Left alone, Sebastian lingered, the taste of her still on his tongue. His lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile, before following her back out.

Dinner wound down soon. George and Diana excused themselves to sleep, leaving only Adam, Emily, and Sebastian at the table.

Emily nudged aside her half-eaten slice of cake. “I’m full,” she muttered, pushing the plate away.

“I’ll take it,” Sebastian said instantly, reaching for her plate. Without hesitation, he ate directly from the half-eaten side.

Adam froze mid-bite, his fork hanging in the air. His jaw tightened as he stared at the scene.

‘Sebastian Graves—the man who wouldn’t so much as drink from a glass someone else had touched—is eating my sister’s leftovers?’

His brows furrowed, suspicion twisting inside him. But outwardly, he said nothing. He only kept watching Sebastian, his frown deepening, his thoughts restless and unsettled.

Chapter 30 Lock The Door

Later that night, Emily curled up on her bed, the dim glow of the TV casting flickering shadows across the room.

Her phone buzzed insistently on the side table, jolting her from a fog of thoughts.

She reached over to the side table, heart skipping a beat as she saw the name flashing: Sebastian.

Before she could even lift the receiver to her ear, his commanding voice cut through the line.

“Open the door.”

Emily froze, the phone trembling slightly in her grip. “I can’t… Sebastian, go back to sleep in your room…” she whispered urgently.

“I can’t sleep without you,” he said, each word thick with impatience. “Open the damn door, Emily.”

Her pulse raced. Taking a deep breath, she switched off the TV, the sudden silence amplifying her pounding heart. Barefoot, she darted across the room, adrenaline pushing her legs faster than usual.

As her hand reached for the handle, a soft but insistent knock came from the other side.

Emily barely had time to open the door before his tall frame filled the doorway, eyes blazing with something that made her pulse skitter.

“Sebastian—” she started, but he didn’t give her a chance.

Two strides, and his hands were on her shoulders, spinning her back against the wall. His mouth crushed hers in a kiss that swallowed the rest of her words. It was hot, hard, stealing her breath, his fingers sliding from her shoulders to cradle the back of her head as though he couldn’t get her close enough.
