Jules keeps pace with me, matching my kisses and my movements, and we’re fighting for dominance without moving our bodies. He’s on top, but now I’m the one controlling the kiss, grasping his face and bringing it to mine. A moment later, he takes over, bearing down on me and making me groan. Then I wrest control back again.

Fuck. I love that we’re so evenly matched.

And I realize it’s been a long time since I’ve kissed anyone with this kind of enthusiasm. If I ever have.

We break apart, panting, and he trails a rough finger down my cheek as I gaze up at him. I take in his tanned arms, the tattoos and veins and lean muscles braced against me and holding me to him at the same time.

In this moment, I could surrender. To sex. Lust. Craving. Exploration. I could let him take me on a journey—it doesn’t matter where—and I’d be lost in utter pleasure.

He makes a delicious moan in the back of his throat. “I’m so glad you got assigned to my case.”

His words make me realize what the problem is. “Wait. I’m a lawyer.”

“I’m not your client,” he murmurs against my neck, sucking and tracing my skin with his tongue.

“But you’re contractually obligated to my client. You’re—fuck, that feels good—an adverse party.”

“It’s not illegal, is it?”

The word “illegal” jolts me, and I struggle back, trying to gather my wits, which have soared out the window on an ocean breeze. “Wait.”

This time he pulls his hands up and scoots off me, then kneels at my feet, hands on my kneecaps. My face burns. His morphs into a concern that’s almost too much to handle.

“Sam, I’m sorry. I’d never push you. I thought you were okay with this.” One of his fingers taps my leg, like he can’t stop touching me. Like he wants to move it higher, clasp me tighter, but he’s keeping himself from doing it.

I take a big breath, finally forming words about why this isn’t right. “I was okay. But now I’m not. Actually, that’s not true. I’m way more than okay with this. Withyou. I want you badly, and I can’t have you.”

“Because you’re a lawyer?”

“Yes. And no. But yes.”

A big paw rubs his face in frustration, but his voice is calm and gentle. “My sweet Sam. Do lawyers not have sex?”

My cheeks burn. “Lawyers have sex.”

“Then whatever the issue is, I assure you we can work through it. That is, if you want to.”

“I do. But—” I open my mouth to say it, but no words come out. It’s like if I admit them they’ll be true, and I don’t want them to be.

His voice drops to dangerously seductive levels. “Please tell me. What’s the problem?”

“My client’s adverse to you,” I say. “I like you and am very much attracted to you. But there are lots of reasons why I can’t get involved with you. At least not while my client has a potential claim against you.”

He tilts his head, then nods solemnly, standing up. He dusts off his knees, then chooses a chair to my side, leaving me alone on his couch. “What you’re telling me is that even if you wanted to, we couldn’t get together.”

I lean toward him, looking him in the eyes. “I’m telling you Idowant to. But wecan’tget together.”

I can’t believe I didn’t think of this before. Guess I never considered being involved with Julian was a real possibility.

Jules runs his hands through his hair again and then lifts his hips and adjusts his pants, his erection having not flagged at all. When he speaks, his voice cracks. “You’re the first person in a long time—maybe ever—who has seen me for myself. Not as a singer. Not as a celebrity. Not as a product or someone rich. You wantme.”

My hands start shaking, because this feels like the most important conversation of my life. “I do, yeah.”

“And I think you’re the sexiest man I’ve ever seen.” He sighs. “Something about you—your looks, your smell, your voice, what you say. How you dress and act. It’s like you were created specifically for me. I find everything about you attractive.”

“I’m flattered, but don’t go thinking I’m perfect. Trust me. I have unattractive qualities. Many.”

“We all do. All I’m saying is that I find you irresistible. I think if we got together, it would be explosive.”
