“I still can’t remember how I ended up in this bed. Maya mentioned a woman named Scarlett, but I can’t rememberanything about her.” Björn wanted to say more but trailed off. He suddenly felt an inexplicable trepidation attached to that name.

Lennart looked away when Björn mentioned that name. He opened his mouth and closed it again. After a long hesitation he spoke, “Yeah, Scarlett… Well, you two were pretty close as far as I know.”

Björn’s eyes widened. “And?”

“It seems you had a hard time coping with her death.”

So, it’s true.

Although Björn couldn’t remember a thing about the woman, he felt an uncomfortable tightening deep in his gut. He looked away, wishing to ask more, but it was hard to let the words out.

“I’m sorry,” Lennart added.

“We were lovers, weren’t we?” Björn locked eyes with his brother.

Lennart nodded. “I believe so.”

Björn inhaled sharply. “What happened to her?”

“We’re still investigating.”

“Did someone kill her?” Björn’s eyes narrowed.

“It seems so. She didn’t die of natural causes. I mean she was young and wasn’t ill.”

“Of course,” Björn said, biting the inside of his cheek. Although he didn’t know the details, he was sure what he’d do when he recovered enough to get to his feet.Whoever did this I will kill him with my bare hands. I will finish him, but first, I will make him suffer.

Chapter 24

Liam and Edvin leaned over the radio. They tried to catch the signal from other survivors, but after about a whole hour of trying, they realized the futility of their attempts.

Static gave them a headache. Liam turned it off, put his hands on the table and sighed. “I need a break.”

“Me too.” Edvin turned away from the device and rubbed his temple.

“Nothing. Again.”

“Yeah. It’s as if the whole world was wiped from the face of Earth.”

Liam paled. “Don’t even joke about that. That sounds scary.”

Edvin chuckled and cleared his throat. “Well, it’s been two days since the last contact, and radiation levels remain very high. It’s not even safe to go outside and explore.”

“The radiation should decrease at some point. It can’t be like this forever.” Liam shook his head and reached for his cup of coffee.

“By the way, I haven’t seen much of Lennart these days.”

“And I guess you won’t.” Liam sipped the coffee. “He’s obsessed with the case.”

Edvin raised an eyebrow. “Obsessed?”

Liam shrugged.

Edvin also took his coffee and stared at the radio. Both young men got lost in their thoughts.

“What do you think happened?” Liam broke the silence.

“What do you mean?”
