“A murder happened here. It gives me the right.”

“But why us?” Björn insisted. “I didn’t do it. And she didn’t do it either.”

Lennart narrowed his eyes.

“How can you be so sure?”

“What? You’re accusing me?”

“Get out of my way. Acting like this only makes you suspicious.”

“Are you fucking serious?”

“Today I learned that Scarlett died of poisoning. Don’t you try to stop me.”

“Huh?” Björn stepped to the side not believing what he heard. “She was poisoned? But who–?”Wait a minute. He trailed off as the realization sank in. Maya stopped as well and looked at him, but Lennart just grabbed her upper arm and dragged her with him.

Does he want to say that Maya is responsible?

Björn clenched his fists and went after them.

Maybe it’s for the best if he discovers her secret. At least I’ll get rid of Maya. But I hope he doesn’t think of me as an accomplice. Dammit.

When they reached their room Maya opened the door to reveal a disaster zone. Clothes scattered all around the room, glasses and a few cups left empty on the table. Lennart stepped inside after Maya and looked around.

Björn entered last and closed the door. “Whoa!”

A spot in the room that immediately caught Lennart’s attention was a coffee table with the leftover snacks in a bowl, snack packages and a little transparent bag. As he came closer, he could see messy trails on the surface and two white pills that lay forgotten.

He took the tiny bag between his fingers, turned to Maya, and asked, “Is this what I think it is?”

Maya looked at him with wide eyes and shook her head. Lennart examined the transparent plastic closely. There were still leftovers of its contents.

“Then what is it? A baking powder?”

“Aaa… Umm…” Maya scratched the side of her head and looked away.

While Maya seemed like she wasn’t sure what to say, Björn spoke up, “What did I tell you about this? You promised me you wouldn’t do coke while we’re together!”

“I… I…”

“Did you take it too?” Lennart looked at Björn.

“No! Of course not.” Björn shook his head.

“I’ll take this sample for testing with these pills. And I’ll send a team to search the entire room.”

“Are you sure that’s necessary?” Björn asked, irritation noticeable in his voice.

Lennart ignored him and addressed Maya once again, “You’re coming with me. I’m going to put you in the cell until you come to your senses. And you…” he turned to Björn. “You’re going with us. You’ll be interrogated as well.”

“That’s just great!” Björn threw his hands in the air and gave Maya a dirty look. “You had to get us into this mess. I knew taking you with me was a bad idea.”

Chapter 27

“Mom, you can go rest. You don’t need to be by my side all the time. I’ll be fine.” Ryosuke tried to reassure his mother. He wanted to be alone, needing to process everything that happened in peace.
