She stopped fighting. She let me squeeze and squeeze until the body beneath me wasn’t her anymore—it was Kylo, eyeless.

Such a beautiful shade of blue.

EVIE

Iwoke up screaming. Kylo was on top of me, wrestling my hands to my sides.

“Shhh, angel,” he said. “You were dreaming. You’re safe.”

The scream evaporated, and the sight of his eyes still in his skull soothed me back to reality.

“I have to kill her,” I said, jaw clenched and body vibrating with rage.

Kylo stroked my face with a frown. “You scratched yourself,” he murmured.

I winced at the sting, seething even stronger now. That woman was a demon in the truest sense of the word. She belonged in the pits of Lillian’s hells with the rest of them.

It took me several long seconds to calm my heart and steady my breathing.

Kylo kissed my forehead. “Let’s get coffee first before we do any killing.”

When my frown evaporated, he shook his head and laughed. “The depth of your addiction frightens me.”

At the deliberation table,Blade lifted a brow at my brown and gold ceramic mug.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a mug of that size,” he said.

Kylo’s lips turned down. “That’s how Evie evades her two-coffee limit. She started using a bigger cup.”

Harmony laughed.

“I respect the fuck out of a loophole,” Blade said with a nod.

It seemed we all needed laughter today. I welcomed the brief reprieve from my nervous, restless jitters. Commanders and other inner circle members took their seats, all eyeing me with equal parts relief and anticipation.

I swallowed, returning my attention to Harmony and Blade.

“How are things with Abby?” I asked Harmony. Abby was a turned woman Harmony had been seeing.

Harmony winced. “I found out she only saw me as a steppingstone to climb the ranks.”

Blade grumbled an insult under his breath and crossed his arms.

It irritated me to think someone would ever take advantage of someone as bright, warm, and genuine as Harmony. But it didn’t surprise me. It seemed those traits were the exact qualities shitty people looked for.

“I’m sorry, Harmony,” I said. “You deserve better.”

“Thank you, friend.” She waved a hand. “I’m too busy with clan responsibilities, anyway.”

“We’ll get you a war fling,” Blade said. “We all need one.”

Kylo lifted a brow. “A fuckingwhat, Blade?”

Blade grinned impishly. “You know, a lover to distract from all the death. Someone to squeeze at night after a gruesome battle.”

Commander Lachlan’s smile was equally devilish. “Kylo wants to tell us to focus on our devotion to the clan, not on war flings, but he can’t sayshitanymore.” His eyes flickered to me.
