“Thank you, Ashley, for making my job so much easier.”

A chill ran down my spine, and the hair on my arms stood up at the snake-like quality of his voice.

I forced my eyes open and asked, “Do I know you?”

“No.” He stepped closer. “But I know you.”

Shit!He wasn’t alone, and he had a gun. I looked at the back door, wondering if Nathan would hear me scream.

“Scott, or should I say Nathan, can’t save you.”

Vegas.

Before I could scream, a wet cloth covered my mouth.

My last thought as my consciousness faded was that I had to warn Nathan.

Chapter 35

Nathan

Ichecked emails on my phone. I checked in with Dean, the SSI part-timer with Violet. I glanced at my watch.

Twenty minutes. My knees bounced up and down as I grew restless.

According to the internet, a pregnancy test only takes a few minutes. The rest of the appointment could last ten to thirty minutes, depending on the patient’s needs.

I’ll give it another ten minutes.

I lasted five before going to the counter and asking how much longer it’d be.

“I’m not sure, sir. Dr. Greenfield said Ashley wanted some fresh air. That was about ten minutes ago.”

Every muscle tensed. Blood roared in my veins.

“Show me.” She didn’t deserve my anger, but my fear overrode my ability to be polite or patient.

“Sir, I can’t—”

I kept my voice low, but authoritative. “Her life is in danger, and I’m her bodyguard. Now. Show. Me.”

“What’s the—”

“Doc, I need to find Ashley.”

“She hasn’t come back?” Concern filled her voice as she opened the door. “This way.”

“Thank you,” I said. I’d apologize to Sheila later.

I couldn’t reach the back door fast enough. The instant the doctor stepped out of the way, I shoved it and raced out. With my hand on my gun, I scanned the backyard.

“Ashley!”

“I’m so sorry. I didn’t know,” her doctor apologized.

Nothing. That was when I noticed the single black rose on the ground next to Ashley’s purse.

Without turning, I asked, “Do you have cameras back here?”
