“We can’t have children,” Mason said.“We no longer produce sperm.”

“We can still have sex,” Magnus rushed in to say.

He sounded so concerned that she understand that, that she snorted.Typical man.She giggled, and both men smiled at her.

“So, do you eat people?”

“No.We don’t.We drink blood, but we’re very careful about how we do it and who we drink from.”

“Oh.”She wasn’t quite sure how to ask this next question.“Why was Sebastien completely insane?”

“Imagine living beyond your normal lifespan,” Magnus said.“Imagine not aging, not sleeping, not changing while everyone around you aged and died.”

She tried to imagine it, but it was almost too strange.“So, I guess the question should be why aren’t you insane?”

“Anna thinks,” Mason said.“That it’s because we have people to care for, who care about us.”

She looked between them, hope a wild stallion galloping in her chest.“Like me?”

Magnus had to holdhimself back from reaching for Darlene.Again.

He’d feared her reaction to the truth, to the strange horror that was their life.He and his brother had managed to stay sane by focusing on keeping their family safe.They’d added their employees to the safe list, which also helped.But in recent years, Mason was having more and more trouble keeping his temper in check.He was having the same difficulty.

Then they’d met Darlene.Her refusal to look at the world with cynical despair, who looked at them with admiration and kindness, had changed their perception of life.

She’d become their center, their focus, and their reward.

If she refused them, they’d likely need to be put down by Bazyli.

The expression on her face, the raw hope, gave him the faith to keep talking.
