“What do you mean, since you were kids? Didn’t you just meet her last month?” I ask, leaning back on the dresser.
“No. We knew each other as kids in Italy. I went by a different name. She didn’t know until the other day. Fuck, I can’t stand this.”
“I don’t see the issue. So you love her. It’s not like she rejected you. She wants you too, just not on paper. She even accepted all your terms,” Ciro says. Something passes over him and I try to not put too much thought into it.
If I’m being honest I feel something for Jack. It’s not a lifetime love, but it is a start. She’s funny, smart, and a fucking force to be reckoned with. She’s going to make a great Don and I can’t wait to be by her side when she does. Everything I’ve worked for and everything I’ve ever wanted will be mine.
“How can the two of you be okay with this? Sharing her? Letting someone else into your girl’s pussy.”
“Whoa, back the fuck up. Don’t talk about her like that. You’re drunk and a fucking mess, but don’t degrade the situation. Yeah, at first I was skeptical. It’s weird, some made up bullshit the people in the Midwest do. It’s not a part of our culture, but I see it this way. I’ve never wanted a wife. This life is too fucked up. Jack’s offering me the chance to rise to the top and have a fucking family at the same time. Protection. When we’re all together, we’re something, but separate we’re nothing. Think about that,” Ciro says, pushing himself off the wall and striding through the door.
Everything he’s saying is true. It’s an ideal situation for all of us. I just need to make Marcello see it, because if he leaves, I know Jack will be upset and I don’t want that for her, as fucked up as that sounds coming from me.
“I’m with Ciro. This isn’t normal, but we’ll make it work. If you love her the way you say you do, then you’ll make it work. Don’t be a jealous asshole because you think love is supposed to go one way. Nothing about this is traditional, but I think it could be great.”
I walk out leaving him to his thoughts. Maybe if he sleeps this off he won’t ruin anything. I don’t want to be the one to tell Jack if he does.
Chapter Seventeen
Iwake up to the scurrying of people running through the house. Too much noise this early in the morning, and then it hits me - I’m marrying Dante today.
I spring up and throw the blankets off me rushing for the bathroom. The shower is steamy by the time I brush my teeth and take care of my morning business. My thoughts are all over the place. I want today to be perfect, but how can I when Marcello still hasn’t given me his answer. He promised to be here today, but I’d give anything to have him standing by my side.
“Are you up?” Ana screams from the bedroom.
“Obviously, bitch. I’m in the bathroom,” I yell back, smiling and tying my robe around me.
“Nice mouth, how about we get rid of the attitude and start getting you ready. Nikki is going to be here in a bit.”
The steam follows me out into my bedroom and she gives me a smirk before throwing her suitcase on my bed. Her dress is hung up next to mine and for a moment I look at them together.
“I’m getting married today,” I whisper.
“Yup, to a hot as fuck man that I’d like to bang incase you get tired of him.”
“You’re unbelievable. I don’t know why you're here. And what’s up with the suitcase?”
“You love me and it’s for all my stuff. I had to pack for little Lou too. My husband is an idiot and would forget everything.”
“Good morning,” my mother bellows from the hall. Ana opens the door and my mother is holding a tray of food for both of us. My grandmother follows her with a bucket of ice and a champagne bottle.
“Morning, Momma. You didn’t have to make breakfast. I could have grabbed something.”
She ignores my comment and sets the tray down on the nightstand. Ana rushes to make coffee and the thought of having something in my stomach doesn’t seem like a bad idea.
I kiss both of them and my grandmother holds me a little tighter than she normally does. She doesn’t speak much English, but this didn’t need to be communicated into words.
“Ti amo, Nonna,” I say, grabbing her close again.
“Ti amo, anch’io,” she replies
I grab a plate and tuck into the eggs and fruit she’s prepared. Coffee washes it all down and by the time we’re done, Nikki is here. I can hear Cal giving her a hard time in the hallway.
“Ana, go save Nikki before Cal drives her crazy,” I ask, putting my plate back on the tray and giving my Momma a kiss on her cheek. “Thank you for making me breakfast. It was delicious.”
“You’re welcome, gioia. Anything for you on this day. I’m so excited to see you finally married. And then I can have grandkids! I miss having a baby to hold.”
“There’s no babies right away. I want to live my life as a married woman first. Babies can come after,” I explain, going into the wardrobe and putting on the “Bride” robe Ana bought me as a gift.
