SAM

I came backto Wild Bronco to settle up with everyone I’ve wronged. For obvious reasons, the Beaumont family are the first people on the list. But I wasn’t expecting to run into Kay as soon as I rolled into town.

Fiction & Foam is one of the only coffee shops in Wild Bronco. How was I supposed to know she owned the dang place?

I haven’t been here in a decade. Pieces of this town are unrecognizable, a reminder that Wild Bronco is no longer my home.

Not that it was much of a home before I left.

Growing up, the Beaumont's big fancy ranch house was the closest thing I ever had to a real home. It started when Kay’s father hired me for some odd jobs around the ranch. Eventually I got good at fixing anything with four wheels and before I knew it, I had a full-fledged job doing whatever Mr. Beaumont needed.

Adam Beaumont, Kay’s dad, was a real man. And he taught me what a manshouldbe. He became the only father figure I’d ever had in life…until I messed it all up.

And it seems like I messed things up with Kay, too.

She’s as pretty as she ever was. She’s changed, too. She’s thicker now, curvier. She dresses differently. The Kay BeaumontI remember from high school was always wearing oversized sweaters and baggy pants. Which was a damn good thing for me at the time, since seeing even a glimpse of her freckled shoulders used to send my hormones racing.

Today, though? Today was torture. Seeing her thick thighs and juicy ass wrapped in tight denim. And her curvy chest was barely contained behind that cute little apron.

The idea that other men witness her like this all day long while she serves them coffee makes me feel a level of jealousy that I know I don’t deserve to feel about her.

Because after all, she doesn’t belong to me. No matter how much I’d like to have her.

She’ll never be mine. She hates me, and she’s right to hate me.

I wasn’t prepared to see her as soon as I rolled into town, and I certainly wasn't prepared to feel that mixture of shame and lust, for the need for her to come roaring back, just as strong as it was the day I left.

I get into my big blue pickup truck, irritable from the interaction with Kayandfrom the lack of caffeine. I’ll have to get my coffee fix somewhere while I’m in Wild Bronco. And once I find some coffee, I’ll move onto my second stop of the day.

CHAPTER 3

KAY

I can’t getSam off my mind for the rest of my shift. I’m so distracted, I spill a whole pitcher of hot, steamed milk all over my leg. The piping hot liquid sears my skin through my jeans, bringing actual tears to my eyes.

I’m taking this little accident as a divine sign that I need to call it a day and go home.

Once my afternoon shift manager pulls in, I take off my apron and wave goodbye to my crew. I need a shower…and probably some burn ointment and a bandage.

I also need to get my head on straight after seeing Sam today.

I pull into the driveway of my family’s house. Yes, at twenty-six years old, I still live with my parents. At first, I stayed home to save up money. Then I stayed to help take care of Dad.

I used to be insecure about living with my parents at my age. But I’ve gotten over that. Yes, I live at home with my parents…but I also own a successful business that I created all by myself. How many twenty-six year olds can say that?

Besides, it’s not like the ranch house is small. Actually, it’s huge. I have plenty of privacy in my own little wing on the other side of the house from my parents’ suite.

Images of Sam’s infuriatingly handsome face are still in my brain when I open the front door and step inside. And that’s when I see Sam’sreal lifeface, along with the rest of him, sitting on the leather sofa next to my dad.

Dad raises a gray brow.

“You’re home,” he says with a gentle smile. “I thought you were working until nine.”

I can tell from the shadows under his eyes that he’s tired. He should be in his bed resting, but instead he’s downstairs sitting next to Sam, whose large, powerful body only magnifies how frail my dad has become in the last couple of years.

“I was,” I say. “I got hurt, so I came home early.”

“Hurt?”
