I explain the games and how she's positioned. Her training will help keep her steady and hopefully, on the bike. A Brother setting up demonstrates.
“Can I try?” she asks and the Brother shakes his head no looking right at me.
“If he’ll loan his bike, yeah.”
He almost lands on his ass getting off quick. I sit and she climbs on the fender. The bike is too small for me but she’s steady on it and not gripping my hair or even shoulders.
“What bike do you ride for games. I know there’s reasons for all of them but have no idea what those reasons are.” Her questions are always cute and valid.
I give the Brother his bike back and walk her to the front explaining. “I’m tall so all bikes aren’t a good fit. Enforcers ride Ducati 916’s with a shit load of aftermarket enhancements. They order basic so no new technology is on it to interfere with what they add. The bikes come in without even paint on them, no plastic either, it’s called naked. One of my dealerships has a killer garage that builds for us and specializes in tailor-made for the public. They built the blue chopper, that’s the long bike, it was built for me as a surprise. They had a computer measure me while I was there and had no idea that they did it.”
She laughs. “Nice surprise. What about the others?” I love that curiosity.
“The faded red one is an old Chief Classic. It was my first bike and I planned on having it forever so I still have it. The other blue one is a Breakout. It’s my tribute to the requisite Harley all bikers have to own, but it’s a good bike, powerful, comfortable and handles tight.” The look she gives me has me explaining. “Handles turning and shifting terrain well.” With her nod, I go on. “The red and white Ducati RR was a gift from my dad and Rex for making VP. It’s street legal and sharp but not really comfortable for my size. Then this one, I ride this one a lot lately because the seat should be more comfortable for you. It’s another Ducati but altered for cruising comfort. It has the same power as the Enforcers with the technology they normally add for us. They’re building another that you’ll get to pick the seat and color for.”
“The purple and the blue with green flame?”
I’d have thought she’d be excited or ask when or something about the bike she helps with. “The purple is my dad’s bike and the blue and green is Rex’s. He hasn’t ridden since my dad died, it’s not his thing.”
She nods. “It’s smaller than the ones you normally ride and the color isn’t you. You stick to red, black and blue.”
I smile at that. “I like that you noticed.”
She giggles. “Nothing but knee pads here. Inoticethat your whiskey was stolen.”
I shrug getting on the bike. “The Prospects might have saved me some but the Brothers are here to party.”
Riding to where the games are set up, she surprises me standing up. I slow down and let her get a feel for how it will play out.
“Surfs up?” a Brother yells and Falcon starts swearing about us practicing. She gets encouragement from almost everyone else and her little giggle has me smiling.
Before the slow race, Freedom pulls her aside and gives her a pep talk. I’m smiling when she comes back. “You’d think this was a tournament and I’m matched with her. This is new and my best is all I can do.”
I have to laugh. “It’s a game, little Kram. Let’s have some fun. When we’re done, whether we win or lose, we get to drink and listen to the Brothers replay our day in front of the fire.”
