Chapter Five

Two weeks

Raid

Riding to town B, we stop at the market first to check on the Brother running it. Derrick loves everything, the job, the customers, his workers and the Brotherhood. I like that.

Brothers like when Cort stops by and always want to talk. It’s good until he says he bought a house in the village. This makes the stop not so much fun anymore. Cort calls Banks to buy the mortgage then explains what is going on with Reynolds. Derrick puts an alert on Reynolds’ name and then gets back to happy. The man will have to travel for food. Badass isn’t selling to him.

I laugh getting on my bike knowing this will spark an idea for Cort. Before we’re even out of the lot, Cort is telling Hade to get Prospects calling all the businesses to stop Reynolds from buying anything from us. He’s nothing if not predictable.

I chime in. “Web can put an alert out to stop his cards from being accepted.”

“Do that too, Hade. No cash, no credit. Can we freeze his accounts with some kind of glitch?”

I laugh. He’s going to get arrested yet. “I think that thought went over the mic, Brother.”

“That’s probably not good. Take that to Web and clear it off after he hears it, Hade.”

Hade is hyperventilating in my ear again. The Brother needs to shut his mic off.

“Have you noticed I haven’t had any Control shifts?”

He just noticed? He hates Ops room shifts. “Because you’re always leaving shit up to the Brothers.” Every time he’s on he says shit likeget rid of them. Then when the Brother asks if it’s permanent, he says, your call.

“They do the work, they should get to decide. If I had to run a mile to catch a cockwomble, I’d opt for bullets after beating the stupid fuck.”

Hade’s breathing heavy in my ear again. “Hade, see Patcher for the breathing issues you got or shut the fucking mic off.”

He’s laughing out loud now. “Roger, VP.”

Finally, it’s quiet.

“Cockwomble?”

He laughs. “British, obnoxious person. You know Freedom told Seren about the dick in a dish. Seren said Lorelei knew and was laughing about it.”

Shit. “Yeah. I had to explain why Leo kicked his father. He told her in the medic room. She was afraid he’d try picking Leo up and I said you did an eye-for-an-eye thing and he’s not getting out of the hospital before she was.”

“He’s in jail. Falcon went to visit him with Mounty. Mounty has some friends there that will make sure the dicktwat is well taken care of.”

Jesus. “You notice Mounty and Trask have friends everywhere. For deputies, they’re well known and they were both new here.”

We pull into the lot and shut off the bikes. “Honest cops are noticeable. Mounty went to bat for the railroaded people that ended up in jail. Trask stayed in the background, but he got the paperwork somehow. People respond to them because they’re good Brothers to know. They’re always helping someone out.”

That’s true. They came over and played ball with Leo and me. “Yeah. I’m glad they came in and they make good Officers.”

“Second tier will move up soon. We’ll need more Officers again.”

I nod following him into the Sheriff’s station. “I have the list ready. We have Officers from other Clubs that might be a good fit. Why are Six-Guns here?”

“You ever notice that I only have to show up for shit to happen?” His smile should make me nervous, but he’s right.

I laugh. “Nothing is happening now, but I’m sure it will.”

He pulls the door open and walks in. “We should get lunch after this. The steakhouse is on our way back. I like that back road now.”

“I always did, it beats the slab view.” The Six-Gun at the counter turns our way.
