“My Brother, Kenny.”
How Cort gets into shit like this is pure luck. I can never decide if it’s good luck or bad luck.Cort smiles like he’s posing for pictures. Jesus. “Kenny the drug dealer? Is that who he means, Raid?”
I nod. “I think that’s who he means.”
“The guy that had ten-year-old kids selling drugs? The same one that had kids beat if they went to school?”
The asshole is getting pissed. “By the way he’s reacting, I’d say it’s that guy, Pres.”
“What did you do to him?!” Oh shit. He pulls his gun.
Cort has a red dot on the dick’s forehead and Jerry inches closer to the idiot. “I sent him to the Sheriff, of course. Drugs are illegal. Handing ten-year-olds guns and drugs with intent to distribute is illegal. So, I beat the shit out of him for shooting me and sent him to the Sheriff. Isn’t that right, Sheriff?”
Jerry’s right behind the dumbass dick. “It is, Cort. Drop your weapon and lay down on the ground.”
“He’d be a great candidate for dick in a dish, Brother.” I say this not to be mean, but the dumbass is still standing. Cort laughs agreeing with me.
“What about them? They have guns pointed at me!” He still has the red dot on his head so he isn’t wrong.
I shake my head, roll my eyes at him and lower my gun. “You do have a point, but they’ve seen our licenses. You’re still standing and didn’t fill out the form yet. There are at least ten guns pointed at you from behind and five in front. You’ll get to see your Brother now.”
His shoulder moves showing he’s going to turn toward Jerry and Cort shoots him with the laser. “Dick in a dish is too good for him. You ready for lunch, Raid?”
“Yeah, I’m hungry. Jerry, you should sign your deputies up for training. Cort shot the dumbass and your deputies are still holding their guns. At the very least, we should have been hit by friendly fire by now.”
Cort laughs. “Pointing out our lack of holes isn’t going to win you any friends, Brother. This is why everyone loves Trask and Mounty. They would just walk away. It’s a self-deprecating moment that we don’t need to help them out with.”
I follow him to the bikes. “I’m just saying we can train them, that’s their Sheriff, he should be protected by the best.”
“I can see your point. Jerry, think about training. We can run boot camps that help with response times.”
A few of the deputies say they’ll take it. Jerry laughs walking to his car.

While we wait for food, Cort asks, “Lorelei went to work today?”
I know he knows she did so he’s working up to what he wants to know. “Yeah, she said she needs to be there. Doc cleared her, but she’s in the chair for at least another two weeks. No pressure on it he said.”
He nods. “Seren said you brought her to the store.” His smile says she told him more than that.
“Yeah, she kept telling me all the food they had, but I didn’t know some of it or we use different names.”
He laughs. “Youuse different names. You still call the pizza bites, pillow bites.”
I shrug. “They look like pillows. They have tiny bagels too. Does Seren make those?”
He shakes his head no but looks interested. “The kid’s snacks do it for you. I like breakfast. Amos said Leo got a ribbon at school. He’s doing good. I knew he was smart.”
“He’s in a class with older kids. Lorelei was worried, but now with Little Brothers she settled.” The kid is smart is a fucking understatement. He told us all the stars last night.
We move for food, but I know he isn’t finished. “Seren says Lorelei is smart like that. He takes after his mom.”
“Yeah. Just say what you’re edging at.” I don’t need the game here.
He smiles. “You always know. It’s been two weeks and you haven’t said shit about Lorelei unless I ask. What’s going on with that?”
I knew it. “You put her in my house on purpose. You’re a dick.”
