In other words, they don’t have anything yet but it’s a possibility. I’m out of the chair and walking, making anything is possible a believable outcome. “I don’t know who to tell, but they can stay as long as they need to. If Leon needs to be close, we have the room here, I just need medics and nurses.” Anything we can do to achieve the impossible will be done.
Pres and VP show on the side of us as if the circus acts are normal for everyone. No one reacts with even an extra blink, proving crazy to be a normal part of our lives now.
“I appreciate it, Brother. I know this isn’t a great time for you but Leon won’t stay in the medic room for long.” Pres looks tired, his wild, white and blonde hair more wild than usual and turbulent eyes smoldering color wheels in motion today.
“There’s a house by mine that has two bedrooms so a nurse or medic can stay. The kids will be close and we can merge the two houses so we’re together more than we’re not. I got help with Shadow and Light. Prometheus just proved the enhanced dogs can work for the jobs with their watches, so I don’t need both my partners.”
He pulls me up from leaning back on the deck to standing and hugs me. “Relax. I thought it would be too much for you. You’re walking for the first time in years. Tell me what you need and I’ll get it here. Benny is a PA and can move with the boys. He moved from Alpha to Honor for them. We have two doctors and plenty of medics we can supply you with. Alder hasn’t sent me your release. Did you get that from him?”
I send the question to Light. He chuffs behind me and shows negative. “No, Pres, but Asa was here before I left for the job with VP. The engineer said he was at a meet with everyone talking about the job we were on.”
They all laugh.
“I was on Ops so maybe Cort has it. He’s on his way.” Pres isn’t laughing. The paper must be a thing for Badass like the military.
Mase bumps my shoulder with his. “It is. The testing too. Justice said Cort has it. If you need help let me know.”
“Roger, Boss, but Shadow and Light will keep me covered. They always have my back.”
Mase smiles wide. “Badass is deep in every one of you. That’s why Cort pushed so hard for this. Call if you need human, venting, or skeleton help, Brother. I got a clear line to the healers too.” He’s fun. He brought my skeleton when the chip was healed in me and gave me pointers.
I hold my smile. “Will do, VP.”
Pres and Falcon laugh. I shrug at the colonel. They laugh at everything. He nods reminding me that seers see everything.
When Mase nods, I walk away. “I’m checking on the room changes before it gets too busy.”
Pres walks with me. “You’d check no matter how busy it is.”
His eyes were disorienting when I first met him, but now I’m comforted by them. Different doesn’t mean much here. No one seems to care what’s different or how you work as long as you get it done.
He bumps my arm. “We don’t care. No problems climbing today. Mase said it wasn’t even a thought in your head.”
“No, Pres. I realized on the way back that I didn’t plan any moves but let training and experience guide me. It worked, so I decided I’ll keep doing that.”
He laughs with Falcon and the colonel sounding off from behind us.
“You’re not just Green Beret.”
I turn a little too fast and VP steadies me. Everyone stops but Falcon’s eyes are boring into mine. He was on an assassin team so he’d see traits that others don’t. “Delta Force before that one. CIA dropped me to captain but paid me higher than colonel. I didn’t know I changed branches until after I woke up chipped to my dogs.” My words come out low so I’m not overheard because I’m too young for colonel but got the pay for it. Harky said quite a few Brothers and Presidents here got it too but he didn’t give names so I don’t, or ever really mention it. So many Brothers deserved better pay; without the extra training I grew up with from my uncle, I would have been one of them.
“We’re all on camera,” the colonel says.
VP laughs. “He jams us or one of the dogs does.”
I nod and turn back. “Teller gave the code to Light so I’m not wearing another cuff. I can activate it through the chip.”
“Isn’t your chip tracked?” Pres is a smart Brother that you wouldn’t think is IT but they all understand IT better than you’d expect.
I’ve learned they’re all trained for it.“No, the program and all data was lost at the underground EU base with all the leads and dogs. The tech that went nuts burnt through the main servers. It took them almost six months to find us the first time. The chair was a flag but when we made it to the US, I had a PA living on the farm. He did my therapy and I helped with the forms and paperwork for him and his family. They had Border Patrol riding their asses. Asa has us on the Badass tracking now but that just happened last week.” I lift my coat and show my wrist.
The colonel surprises me. “The PA is who Harper sends updates to. When you got here, he was calling daily. Light hooked him up with feeds so he could see your stats on the monitor in your room. Do you talk to him?”
“Yeah, well, I talked to him before I got the skeleton. We chat now so he can see us. He’s how I got good in the skeleton. He’d do virtual therapy on my off days.”
He laughs. “Never give in, or up.”
I smile at the familiar line. “Never. This is me.”I point so Pres turns.
