Once I was done with my shower, I wrapped a towel around me and exited the bathroom. There was no trace of him in sight. He didn’t even bother to wait ’til I came out to leave. Shit like that made me feel like a fucking whore, but I can’t complain because I signed up for it.
Stopping at the nightstand, I grabbed my phone and saw that I had several missed calls. Dialing Hendricks back, I placed the phone on speaker and took my uniform out of the closet.
“Where have you been? I’ve been trying to reach you,” Hendricks said soon as he picked up.
“Been busy. What’s wrong?”
“We just got a call about a child overdose at the high school. You might want to get down here.”
“Why? What’s wrong?”
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”
“I’m on my way.”
We’ve been receiving a lot of phone calls about overdoses within the last couple of weeks. I’m not sure what’s going on,but whoever was selling drugs in my town was going down. Whenever I catch them, they’ll never see the light of day again.
People thought that just because this was a small town, they’d be able to do whatever they wanted and get away with it. Not happening if I have something to do with it.
I got dressed in my uniform and stepped to my dresser. Picking up my hairbrush, I brushed my hair back into a bun at the nape of my neck. It’s how I wore my hair whenever I went to work. I worked so much that whenever people saw me outside of my uniform, they seemed shocked. It was as if I wasn’t supposed to come out without my uniform or something.
After I brushed up my hair, I grabbed my gun off the dresser and placed it in the holster. I made sure to grab my keys and phone before leaving out the door.
The sun beamed down on me soon as my feet touched the porch. It’s hot as fuck outside, and I can already tell that it’s about to be a long day.
My day is starting off with a death. That’s never a good thing. For weeks, I’ve been trying to figure out who’s been supplying the streets with narcotics. It was already enough that adults were dying from it, but to hear that a child possibly did pissed me off. Kids were innocent. They didn’t know what they were doing and damn sure didn’t know what many drugs were. People had to introduce them to that shit. Filthy mutherfuckers.
Hitting the key fob on my cruiser, I climbed inside and backed out my driveway. The school is about twenty minutes away from my house. Soon as I turned into the parking lot, flashing lights were everywhere.
Teachers and students stood around in the parking lot. They should’ve been focusing on trying to get these kids safely home to their parents instead of standing around here, trying to be nosey.
Lifting the yellow tape, I stepped underneath and entered the building. I tread down the hallway ’til I found everyone moving in and out of the cafeteria. Inside was Hendricks, the coroner, and the body, which lay on the floor in between two tables.
“What happened?” I asked when I approached and slipped a pair of blue gloves on my hands.
“A few of the students say that she was late getting to lunch. When she sat down at the table, she collapsed,” Hendricks responded. I gazed down at the young woman before me. She had cornrows, and tattoos covered both her arms. There’s a tear drop underneath her right eye. If people truly knew what that tattoo meant, they’d stop going out and getting them.
“What did she take?”
“That’s what I wanted you to take a look at.” Hendricks reached down and picked up a black book bag that was lying next to her. I opened the bag and was in awe at what I saw. She was walking around with so many narcotics on her that she could get at least ten years in prison. She must’ve got tempted and took some of the cocaine. Everyone who deals with drugs knows that if you have too much cocaine, you can overdose. I’m not understanding why she came to school with that much product on her. Either she’d just met with her supply or was about to make a sell to someone else.
“Does anyone know where she may have gotten the drugs from?” I questioned Hendricks.
“We haven’t gotten around to asking that question yet.”
“Well, what are y’all waiting for? We need to find out where she got it from and where she was going with it.” Nodding, Hendricks strolled off. I took one final look at the body before leaving out of there.
Instead of sticking around the school, I headed to the station. I was about to go look over the other cases and see if I could finda connection. It’s time to find out who’s supplying these drugs and get their asses off the streets before there’s another death.
Lately, Magnolia Falls has taken a leap in the crime department. I’m not sure what’s going on around here. I’ve been trying my hardest to keep the crime rate down. Mayor Trent Calloway wasn’t gon’ be pleased with this.
Pulling into my parking space, I got out the car and entered the building. “I’m trying to tell you, he came out of nowhere,” this woman explained to one of the officers as I passed. Another officer escorted this guy in handcuffs toward booking. I approached my glass office door that has my name on it and unlocked it.
Pushing my door in, I took a seat at my desk. Alicia stopped at my door with a piece of paper in her hand. “What’s that?” I asked her as I powered on my computer.
“Just another wanted flyer that just came through.” She waved the paper in the air. “What happened with the kid at the high school?”
“That’s what we’re trying to figure out now.”
