“Well, I’m here if you need me,” she replied and stepped away from the door.

“Don’t worry, I’m going to figure out what’s going on,” I spoke out loud.

Chapter 8

Remedi

That night

I’ve been cooped up in the house and was tired of being in here. There wasn’t much to do around here. Reese had disappeared after shooting Carlos. I’m not sure exactly where she is or what she’s been doing. She sent me a text to let me know that she’s fine so I wouldn’t be worried sick about her, just like she knew I would be. Eventually, she’d turn back up. Right now, it’s just been me and Prada.

Getting up from the couch where I’ve been most of the day, I padded to my bedroom to find something to put on. I was about to go out and see what else their nightlife has to offer.

When Reese took me to Boots & Bottles, I had a good time. I don’t expect anything less wherever I end up tonight.

Since I haven’t really had anything to do during the day and I missed the work, I plan on making a trip to the veterinarian clinic tomorrow and see if they can use my help ’til I figure out exactly what I want to do. I missed home, and Ma called constantly, trying to get me to come back. I’m not sure if I want to just yet.

Grabbing my suitcase, I opened it and searched for something to put on. I found this black mini dress. It was something simple where I didn’t have to put in too much effort to look like something. Going out alone was something I’m used to doing. Sometimes when I wanted to go somewhere, Mike would tell Whitney she couldn’t go, and I’d end up going alone. It didn’t bother me how it would other people. Plus, I learned that when I did go out by myself, I got the most attention. It’s easier to attract people when you’re alone. It gives you the chance to network and maybe even hook up if that’s what you want.

Prada barked at my foot. I looked down and she chased her tail, letting me know that she was ready for dinner. Sometimes she acts as if she hadn’t eaten in days. For her to be so small, this dog was greedy.

“I’m not going to forget to feed you before I leave. Come on.” I might as well get her out of the way before I take my shower and get dressed. That way, I wouldn’t have to worry about dog hair getting all over my black dress. Granted, I keep Prada groomed extremely well, but sometimes that doesn’t even stop her from shedding completely.

We went into the kitchen, and I fixed her food. Placing her bowl on the floor at the island, I sat on the stool and waited for her to eat while I scrolled social media. Somehow, I ended up on Reese’s page, and that’s when I saw that she was friends with Khalif. I clicked on his profile and scrolled through it. He didn’t really post much. His page was so empty that I ended up finding his deceased wife. She was beautiful with her toffee complexion. Her curly black hair stopped at her shoulders. Khali looks a lot like her.

I didn’t know much about either one of them, but I hated it for both of them to lose her the way they did. Khali is so sweet. She deserves to have her mother in her life. Khalif is doing a wonderful job of raising her.

I ended up on a picture of Khalif alone, and I actually got a good look at him. The man is handsome, without a doubt. If I wasn’t in a pickle, I probably would’ve thought about giving him a real shot, but there’s no way that I can bring him and Khali into my chaotic life.

I hit the power button and placed my phone face down on the island. Chewing on my thumbnail, I looked down to see if Prada was done eating. She drank half the water in her bowl and stared up at me. “Hurry up and use the bathroom when I let you out.” Getting up from the barstool, I opened the door, and she shot straight out. I stood on the porch, waiting for her to use the bathroom so I could go back in the house and get ready.

Prada used the bathroom and came back up on the porch. We went inside and she went straight to her bed with one of her toys. I entered the bathroom and turned on the shower. Connecting my phone to Alexa, I turned on iTunes, and Mariah the Scientist’s “Spread Thin” blasted. I couldn’t relate to the song, but that still didn’t stop me from liking it.

Stripping out of my clothes, I climbed over into the tub. It took me a good forty minutes to get a bath and shave. Exiting the bathroom, I went into the bedroom and lotioned my body down before putting on my black thongs and panty set. Since I was going out and wasn’t sure where I’d end up, I decided to beat my face with a natural beat—it’ll serve for any occasion.

Once my face was done, I got dressed and took a look at myself in the mirror. My silk press was getting old. I needed to find someone here who knows how to do hair extremely well. When it came to my hair, I’m picky as hell. I never took the time out to learn myself how to care for it, so I’d pay whatever was necessary to get it done the correct way. Hopefully, they have someone here who’s good with natural hair. I’d have to ask Reese when she comes back.

Grabbing my clutch, I left the bedroom and headed straight for the front door. By the time I stepped back outside, it was dark. The sun dropped so fast. I didn’t mind because whenever it got dark, it wasn’t as hot as it normally would be during the day.

Hitting the fob on my truck, I got inside and headed into town. It took me fifteen minutes to get there. I drove around, not looking for anything in particular, when I found Moonshine Junction. Judging by the name, I just knew there was a good time behind those walls. The parking lot has a decent number of cars in it, so I pulled in and got out of the truck.

Strutting to the door, I opened it and was met by the bouncer. He licked his plump lips as he eye fucked me. Reaching into my clutch, I pulled out my ID, but before I could even hand it to him, he lifted his hand, stopping me. “You’re good,” he said and stepped out of the way.

Some song blared through the speakers as I made my way over to the bar. I didn’t know who the artist was, but it was country and sounded good. I’d have to ask someone the name of the song so that I can look it up and possibly save it to my phone.

There were a couple people sitting at the bar. A man and a woman. They weren’t together—they sat stools apart. I went over and sat down in between them. The bartender immediately came over to take my order.

“What can I get for ya, beautiful?”

“Um, this is my first time in here, so I’m not sure of the menu. Can I get one to look over right quick?”

“Of course.” She flashed me a grin, reached behind the bar, pulled a menu out, and then placed it down in front of me. “Let me know whenever you’re ready to order.”

I nodded and turned my attention to the menu. They had a lot of stuff on there, particularly a lot of variations of moonshine, which wasn’t surprising. It’s in the name, so I knew they’d be selling it. I’ve never had moonshine before in my life, and damnsure didn’t want to try it. Moving on to the margaritas, I decided on the Blue Lagoon margarita to see what it would taste like. It’s nothing I’ve had before, but I was a sucker for trying new things that I thought I’d like.

Lifting my hand in the air, I called the bartender back over. “I’ll take the Blue Lagoon margarita.”

“Good choice.” She grabbed a glass and proceeded to make my drink while I looked over the food. I hadn’t had anything for dinner, and I was starving. I’ve been surviving off junk food most of the day. The last time I ate was this morning when I made a quick omelet for breakfast. Some days, I’d eat heavily all day, and then there are other days when I barely eat anything at all. When I was back at home and working, I’d have to remind myself at the end of the day that I hadn’t eaten anything. It’s crazy.
