"I'll get you copies of these when I see you next. You read through the rest when you get time. Call me later tonight if you don't fall asleep first." Parson gave Beau one last kiss.
"I'll call." He watched Parson leave, wishing he could go with him.
The rest of the shift went slow and Beau spent it reading over the papers Parson had left him. It was nothing he hadn't expected. By the time he left the hospital, he was exhausted and dreading the conversation he was about to have with Bryon.
He parked outside the STK house and headed inside. He hadn't even made it through the door before Bryon was in his face.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing?" Bryon yelled.
"I did what needed to be done. We couldn't wait."
"The hell you couldn't." Bryon paced across the living room.
"He would have been gone if we'd waited for you to get back. I didn't have a choice. I was the only one who could do the job."
"It's not your job to do." Bryon glared at him. "You put this whole team at risk. You could have ruined everything. You're not trained to do this."
"The fuck I'm not. Who do you think taught the others how to cut?"
"Right, and cutting is all you had to do, right?" Bryon shoved a finger against Beau's chest. "The others are trained in combat, they know how to fight, to break into a house unseen, how to clean up so there isn't evidence left behind. You haven't learned any of that. And if you think you know it all by sitting here on your ass watching the others do it, you are mistaken. I don't let guys go out on stings until I'm sure they have the training to do it right, and you have no training."
Beau slapped Bryon's finger from against his chest. "It's done. I didn't get caught, I didn't leave evidence. Carter and Trenton were here to watch things. It was one guy, one old guy. I think I'm able to handle that. I know it's not my job, but we couldn't wait."
"Bullshit. You're too personally involved in this one. Any other case and you would have waited. What happened to your oath to 'do no harm'?" Bryon yelled. "Fucked that one up last night, didn't you?"
"Bry..." Carter said.
"No, don't Bry me. I have a right to be pissed. We have rules on this team for a reason. Those rules keep us safe. They keep us from going to prison like the animals we hunt. We work as a team. One of us doesn't make the decisions. We all do. You're off the fucking team, Beau."
"What?" Beau grabbed Bryon's arm. "You can cut me from the team."
"The fuck I can't. You put everyone here at risk. I can't ignore that. You went off playing hero on your own and could have ruined everything we've worked so hard for. You can't play by the rules, you're off the team." Bryon turned and stomped down the hall, slamming a door.
"Fuck." Beau ran his fingers through his hair. "You had to tell him."
"Of course I told him." Carter rolled his eyes. "You knew I had to. There's no way he wouldn't have found out anyway. We can't pull off a sting without the others finding out. Noam knew about it through his sources two hours after you did it. He called asking questions. You can't hide this shit. I won't even try to hide shit from Bryon. Like it or not, he's the boss. He needs to know everything. That's how we stay safe."
Beau slumped down into a chair. "You know we couldn't wait. He was packed and leaving."
"We should have let him go. There were no kids on site. We would've tracked him." Carter leaned against the fireplace.
"There was no guarantee." Beau was furious. He did what he needed to do. It couldn't wait for the team to get back. The guy had a plane ticket out of town. He would have been gone had they waited. The man's crimes were too severe to not go after him while they had the chance.
"Bryon's right, you are too close to this case. You've let your emotions cloud your judgment. I know you care about Lisa and Jeff, but you should have thought about what would happen to them if you'd gotten caught. They finally think they are getting a forever home and you go and do this shit. It would have tossed them right back into the system if you'd gotten caught."
"You don't think I thought about them? I did this for them. For all of the others who that fucking pedo hurt and abused. I couldn't let him get lost in another state and start the same thing all over. We had the evidence. We had everything we needed but the manpower. I took care of that. Nothing went wrong."
Carter sighed. "I agree with you on all of that, but it doesn't change the fact that you broke the rules. You didn't even bother to call and talk to Bryon. You just acted. Hell, for all I know he could have given us the go-ahead. He knows we know what we're doing, but you didn't even bother to try talking to him. Then you don't bother to tell him after the fact. I'm the one who had to explain shit when he got home. It should have come from you."
Beau sighed.
"Give him time to calm down, then come kiss his ass and apologize. Swear you'll never do it again. You know Bry, he'll let you back on the team. He's just making a point by kicking you off. Once he calms down, once you both calm down, you can talk this through. He's still going to be pissed, but he knows the team needs you. It's not like we can put an ad in the paper to find a new doc, especially one that the whole team trusts."
Beau nodded as he stood.
"You okay?" Carter asked.
"Yeah, fine." Beau gave him a quick glance. "Seriously, I'll be okay. You're right. We all just need to calm down. I'll be by later to talk to him."
