"Thank you." Parson smiled.
"Who wants milk with their cookies?" Becca asked, wanting everyone settled before they started the conversation.
"Me," three children and two men said in unison.
Becca laughed as she set six plastic cups on the table and handed Beau a gallon of milk. "Will you do the honors while I plate the cookies?"
"Of course." Beau took the cups and started pouring.
Becca hoped the news she had to share would be received well. The kids had been through so much. She'd spent hours on the phone with Lenora's mother's friend telling her what the kids had been through. They'd both cried as Becca told their story. She might not have ever met the woman who was going to adopt Lenora and Andy, but she loved her just the same for being willing to take the kids in.
She set the plate of cookies and a stack of napkins down on the center of the table, then took a seat beside Lenora. "You guys did amazing work. These smell so good. Go ahead and try one."
The kids didn't have to be asked twice. They each grabbed a cookie and bit into it. Becca reached for one and smiled at Beau and Parson as they watched the kids. She let them enjoy their cookie before she got serious. "So, I need to talk to Lenora and Andy about where they're going to go live now."
Lenora tensed as she set her cup of milk down. "We can't stay here?"
Becca shook her head. "What if I told you I found a very nice family for you two to go live with back in Michigan? Maybe one who already has a little girl named Emily?"
Lenora's eyes widened. "Really?" She glanced at her brother and grinned. "Emily is my friend. Mommy was friends with her mom. We'd have playdates sometimes. Remember, she came over and we grilled burgers in the backyard with her?"
Andy nodded. "We're going to live with Emily?"
"Yes, with Emily and her parents. They are so excited to have you two come live with them. They were so sad when I told them your parents had died. They said they'd be happy to have you two come stay with them. We're working out details now and making sure everything is legal, but if everything goes right, we should be able to take you there later this week," Becca told them.
"Forever? We won't have to go into foster care again?" Andy asked.
"Yep, forever. They'd be your family. Emily would become your sister." Beau smiled.
"Is that okay with you guys?" Becca asked. "I promised you I'd make sure you were okay with whatever we did. Will you two be happy moving back there? You'd even get to go back to your old school."
Andy's eyes lit up. "The same school? With the same friends?"
"Yep, all the same. I'm told they lived in the same neighborhood as you did when you lived there." Becca was relieved they seemed to be happy about this.
"Yeah, just a few streets away. We'd walk over to play." Lenora took a deep breath. "I'm okay with living with Emily."
"What about you, Andy?" Beau asked.
"I'm okay with it. I liked my old school. I miss my friends there." He didn't look as excited as Lenora, but he wasn't upset and that was what mattered.
"Good, then I'll let them know that's what we're going to do. As soon as Parson deals with the legal stuff, I'll get us a flight to Michigan," Becca told them.
"We get to fly?" Lenora looked even more excited. "I've never been on an airplane."
"Me neither," Andy said.
"Yep, I'll fly with you there and make sure everything is perfect before I leave. But you have to promise to call me sometimes and let me know you're doing okay." Becca raised a brow at them.
"Yeah, we can call," Lenora promised.
"Good. Then it's all settled." Becca leaned over and hugged Lenora, then did the same to Andy.
"Cookie." Eric pointed to the plate.
"I guess you guys can have one more, but that's all until after dinner." Parson grabbed the plate and let each child take another cookie.
"What's going to happen to Eric? Where will he live?" Lenora asked.
