On my last night, it was the wee hours, and Katie was fast asleep on her bed a few feet from mine. I was working, my mind getting fuzzy and tired as I reclined back on the fluffy hotel pillows. My phone lit up, and a message popped up on my laptop screen.

Gabriel

When do you get back?

Seeing that message hit my body like a shot of espresso. I sat up straight and stared at the screen. I minimized my story and typed a reply.

Me

We fly home tomorrow.

Me

Why?

Gabriel

Wasn’t sure if I should book a flight out or not. Would be embarrassing to land at the Tulsa airport while you’re flying away.

Me

You were not about to book a flight.

Then he sent a screenshot of flights from Texas to Oklahoma. My heart leapt into my throat. He was looking?

Me

Why not come yesterday?? Why’d you wait until now?

Gabriel

well it’s not like you ever did tell me that you really wanted me there.

Gabriel:

I just couldn’t take it anymore and decided maybe I’d just show up anyway, then I remembered Katie said she’d be gone ‘just the weekend’

I typed out,I always want you here, but then I deleted it.

Me

I wish you’d sent me this message earlier.

Gabriel

me too

Gabriel

how’s the story?

Me

it was a little tough at first, but then it came naturally. It’s been fun to write. I’m writing right now.

Gabriel

sorry to be interrupting!
