“I brought coffee,” she said, the smirk on her lips saying she knew Kian would protest and brought the beverage just to still his protests. It worked well. Kian was immediately distracted, picking up a cup and taking a sip. He sighed happily, setting his aside to grab one for Dorian as well. And he said he’d be a bad mate. A good mate put his coffee aside to make sure Dorian had his fix. Kian was a good mate.

“I watered your plants; they seem healthy. They do feel neglected, but I explained things, and they seem willing to be patient,” she told Kian, taking a sip of her own coffee.

Kian hummed, a slight smirk on his lips. “I may have spoiled them with attention recently. Did Dad put the ones he stole back?”

Tara snickered and nodded. “He did. I made sure of it. He’ll be here later to check on you. Apparently, his favorite restaurant is just down the street, and he refused to get breakfast from anywhere else.” When she rolled her eyes, the similarities became crystal clear. She looked so much like Kian when she did that. He could tell now where he got the habit from.

“Is he bringing any for us, or does he plan to gorge himself at the restaurant and then come to visit?” Kian asked blandly.

“Your guess is as good as mine, sweetheart. That man is an enigma.” She shook her head, turning her attention to Dorian. “How are you feeling, dear? You’re looking better than you were last night.”

Dorian shot Kian a questioning look, and Kian obligingly explained, “They were both here last night. I was visiting with them when I got the call that you were hurt.”

“Visiting?” she scoffed. “You were–”

“Ah, ah, ah. Nope. Dorian ishealing.”

The way he said it told Dorian there were things that occurred the night prior that Kian didn’t want him to know. Given that Kian told him earlier that something occurred with Doctor Chapman that would make him angry, he assumed it had something to do with that. He let it go. He trusted Kian not to keep important things from him. Dorian was just as careful with him when it was he who was in bed healing.

Tara harrumphed and looked ready to argue with her son, but he cut her off with a single comment.

“Dorian is my mate.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

While yes, they said they’d take it slow with their relationship, he’d never hide their relationship. He wasn’t that much of an asshole. Plus, Kian couldn’t resist messing with his mom a little. Especially when she was annoying him and threatening to let the events of the night prior slip in front of Dorian. The gorgeous vampire needed to rest. Kian knew he would lose his shit if he knew even half of what went down last night.

Watching his mom’s mouth open and close like a fish was hilarious, and he had to hide his smile behind his cup. He glanced at Dorian to see what he was thinking about his mother’s reaction, but Dorian’s eyes were locked on Kian with the sappiest smile on his face. Kian felt his stomach flip, and his cheeks flush a little. Did he have to be so adorable?

“Oh goddess. You’re not joking, are you? You’ve found your mate?”

Pursing his lips thoughtfully, Kian tipped his head. “I guess I did find you. You didn’t even notice me sitting at reception that first day. You were too busy making eyes at your coffee.”

Dorian chuckled, shaking his head. “Like you look at your coffee any differently.”

“Maybe not, but at least I’m modest enough to make those faces in private. No one needs to know you’ve got a hard on for your coffee, Dorian. Do that without an audience.”

Dorian flushed bright red at Kian’s teasing. He was going to say something else, because it was just so much fun to tease him, when his mom reached over and smacked the back of his head.

“Kian Rosewood Elamoira, watch your mouth.”

“Ouch! Unhand me, woman!” he growled, rubbing at the sore spot.

“Oh, I’ll unhand you,” she hissed, reaching for him again. He popped to his feet and darted away, opening a portal to escape her when she tried trapping him in a corner. He reappeared at Dorian’s side, pointing a stern finger at her.

“Nope! I call safe-zone. You’ll hurt Dorian if you keep messing around.”

She huffed, crossing her arms, but didn’t argue with him. “You’re such a brat. Remind me who raised you again?”

“You did,” Kian smirked, blowing her a kiss. His fae side may be known for his mischievousness, but his mom was the troublemaker in the family. He learned everything he knew from her.

She narrowed her eyes, but the grin that took over her face said she wasn’t the least bit sorry for it.

Dorian huffed a small laugh. “I can definitely see the similarities.”

Mom beamed, more than a little proud of herself. Kian just ignored her, plopping himself on the edge of Dorian’s bed and whispering a spell so he could check on him. He was definitely on the mend, but from the damage, he’d be on bed rest for a few days at least. He wasn’t in any danger now, though, which was a major improvement from last night.

“How is he?” Mom asked, watching Kian with her head tipped.
